Abstract/Summary:
Determining whether a technology is appropriate or not for the companies, is a complex process and sometimes wrong decisions are made. Continually, companies invest a high percentage of its budget on innovative technologies in order to obtain greater availability, accessibility and security of their resources. One of these emerging and innovative technologies is the cloud computing, which is considered as a technology strategy that incorporates software as a service and uses the Internet to provide access to resources in a convenient way and user demand.;The purpose of this research is to identify the status of the adoption of cloud computing in the universities of Puerto Rico and analyze the relevance of security and cost factors at the time of its adoption, according to the Information System Managers and Administrative Deans. For data collection a questionnaire was designed, which was evaluated by a panel of experts and validated through Cronbach's alpha, gaining an 85%. The corroboration of hypotheses was carried out by the t test to a significance level of 0.05 bilateral. According to the results, the positions of Information System Managers and Administrative Deans at universities in Puerto Rico are covered mostly by male professionals (71%) with over 20 years of work experience (58%). Regarding the adoption of cloud computing, private universities are at the stage of decision and public universities in Puerto Rico are in the stage of knowledge. According to the model of diffusion of innovation designed by Everett Rogers (1995), most private universities fall into the category of early majority and most public universities fall into the category laggards. Both groups agree that the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data, are equally important factors when considering the adoption of the cloud computing. However, they are not sure if the costs of adopting the cloud computing are equally important for both groups.
