Abstract/Summary:
Although more women have entered sport journalism in recent years, the overwhelming majority of sport writers are men. Women in print media face many challenges including but not limited to sexism, credibility concerns, discrimination, harassment, and difficulty balancing work and family life. The purpose of this research is to examine readers' attitudes toward female print sport journalists in the areas of authoritativeness and credibility. Results of this study revealed no differences in readers' attitudes toward female sport writers. When sexist attitudes were analyzed, it was revealed that overall sexist attitudes did not predict authoritativeness or credibility of female sport writers. However, additional analyses indicated that readers with high levels of benevolent sexism view male sport writers as more credible. These findings suggest that specific types of sexism continue to be a barrier for women in sport journalism.
