Abstract/Summary:
This study delves into the philosophical and psychological hermeneutic understanding of the transformation of mind (hsin) and its implications within the Chinese Ch'an Buddhist tradition. This dissertation attempts to give an understanding of the transformation of mind according to the Ch'an school and the implications of the analysis of the transformation of mind for psychological understanding and practical applications. Using the methodologies of Buddhist hermeneutics and Chinese integral life philosophy, as well as psychological insights from Ch'an philosophical classics, it outlines how kung-fu, inner practice and cultivation of mind, can support the practitioner to self-cultivate his/her mind based on Ch'an philosophical teaching. The transformation of mind, which is the realization of transcendence in Ch'an Buddhism under a broader background of Chinese philosophy, develops a unique understanding and helps to penetrate and transcend the limitations of the psychological make up of the individual practitioner. This research uses Master Hui-neng's philosophy as the foundation and standard to explore the psycho-spiritual understanding of transformation in Ch'an. A broader understanding of the nature of transformation of mind in Ch'an Buddhist teaching is presented in order to provide a more accurate context in which to examine its contribution in the contemporary studies of psychological research in societies that inherit Chinese culture.
