Abstract/Summary:
Previous studies indicated that the non-offending mother's support is important for the daughter's adaptation to long-term sequeale of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). The present qualitative study examines the ways in which Taiwanese women with a history of CSA relate to their non-offending mothers in the specific cultural and social contexts of Taiwan. In-depth interviews have been conducted to collect narrative data from 11 Taiwanese participants in Taiwan. Six significant areas emerge and are discussed in detail, including social environments around the time of CSA, adolescents' perceptions of CSA, questions of disclosure to their mothers, how it impacts their current lives, cultural factors, and current relationships to their mothers. Limitations of the present study, implications of the current findings, and recommendations for future research are addressed.
