Abstract/Summary:
This retrospective, exploratory study was undertaken in an attempt to more fully comprehend the potential meaning and roles of the grandparent-grandchild relationship in the lives of young adult grandchildren ranging in age from 23 to 40 years old. An examination of the subjective reports of eight young adult grandchildren was completed through the use of qualitative methods and procedures. The data were collected through the use of a demographic-personal history questionnaire and in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Analysis focused on two pre-determined research questions, each encompassing the voices and perceptions of young adult grandchildren: (1) How important are grandparents to young adult grandchildren? and (2) In what ways do grandparents impact the lives of young adult grandchildren? The constant comparative method of analysis was utilized.; When young adult grandchildren were given an opportunity to share their memories of and stories about grandparents, they painted compelling, informative pictures of the ways in which these intergenerational relationships impacted their lives. Data analysis resulted in 12 major categories and two minor categories. Due to the complexity of human nature and the aims of this study, categories tended to be complex, dynamic, and overlapping. Overwhelmingly, participants reported that at least one grandparent was highly important and significant in their lives. Each considered relationships with at least one grandparent as very significant in their development. Study participants communicated a wide range of experiences with grandparents, demonstrating the variation characteristic of grandparent-grandchild relationships. A diverse range of experience was shared including favorable and unfavorable aspects of relationships.; A majority of the adult grandchildren clearly identified ways in which their relationship with a grandparent had continued to impact them into adulthood. In general, study participants highly valued and appreciated their relationships with those grandparents with whom they considered themselves to be emotionally close. Grandparents filled numerous roles in the lives of grandchildren participants and taught them a variety of important lessons, attitudes, and beliefs. It was concluded that grandparents could continue to be significant and powerful role models for adult grandchildren. With respect to the complexity of intergenerational relationships, grandparents can be positive and/or negative role models, or some combination of both. In general however, the adult grandchildren participants in this study greatly valued their relationship with the grandparent(s) who they chose to discuss. The diversity and heterogeneity characteristic of grandparents, grandchildren, and their relationships is stressed. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)...
