Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the cultural influences on the experiences of primary familial caregivers of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted in order to explore the multifaceted and rich experience of caregiving.;The participant interviews underwent a thematic analysis which captured topics within themes of Personal and Spiritual Growth, Relationship with the Care Recipient, Other Important Relationships, and Community and Society. Some of these themes were in support of prior research examining caregiving of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease. Social perception and the influence of the community emerged as an important topic for further exploration. A discussion of these findings explore the significance of social perception and why one must take into account this seemingly peripheral yet potentially pervasive influence on the caregiving experience. Implications for professional practice and topics for future research are also discussed.
