Abstract/Summary:
The following research involves the life experience of growing up with a sibling with an autism spectrum disorder. The researcher utilized a generic qualitative interview study to examine a snapshot of the lives of siblings of a sibling with autism spectrum disorder. There are limits in this research, especially qualitative study that examines this phenomenon. In this study, 8 siblings of a sibling with autism were interviewed, and thematic analysis was utilized to construct and explore outcomes. Themes derived involved: Protectiveness, Compassion and Understanding, and Frustration. The exploration of these themes garnered meaningful and rich data that sheds light on the life experiences of growing up with a sibling with an autism spectrum disorder. The data of this project were compared and contrasted with the theoretical perspectives.
