This dissertation is dedicated to the design and development of a prototype of a Permanent Magnet (PM) Modular-Linear-Motor (MLM) drive system. Such a system offers great advantage in terms of flexibility and reusability of the drive, but the modular concept requires redesign of the power electronics section and the control architecture. A novel solution has been proposed to preserve the concept of modularity for the MLM drive system. Speed and current control for a modular drive has been successfully designed and tested on the prototype unit. Another major contribution of the dissertation is the design of a sensorless control solution for modular linear motor drive system. A modified Extended Kalman Filter (E.K.F) has been implemented successfully to estimate the speed and position of PM MLM. |
