Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation analyzes three different forms of dependency that Lithuania is currently engaged in. Unlike scholars, such as Borocz (1992a, 2000, 2001), Basdevant and Kaasik (2003), and Kousis (2004), who focus on economic dependency, I pay particular attention to the triple role of political, economic, and energy dependency relations not only in a regional geopolitical sense, but also through the perspective of managers and professionals in Lithuania. I argue that the forms of dependency that Lithuania has traditionally been engaged in are changing and diversifying as the political and economic landscape of Europe has been changing since the disintegration of the Soviet Union. Contrariwise, during the rule of the Soviet Union, Lithuania's dependency was geared towards Moscow. This dissertation will illustrate that Lithuania is in a condition of "multi-dependency," being dependent ultimately on access to various resources provided by the United States, European Union, and Russia.
