Abstract/Summary:
The limitations of home Internet connections make Personal Videoconferencing (PV) interaction vulnerable to network trouble. This dissertation explores how novice couples collaboratively manage PV network trouble so as to carry on their conversation. It is found that transmission/reception and their perturbations are material frames for participant action, but participants are free to treat this frame as an interactional resource. Couples enact both remedial and non-remedial reactions to PV network trouble, tending to emphasize conversational continuity and minimize their focus on technology unless invoking technology has a bearing on continuity. It is argued that Communication Technology research should treat network trouble as a common and fundamental constraint, and participant concern, in all CTs.Keywords: personal videoconferencing, network trouble, conversation, continuity, novice, couples, home...
