Abstract/Summary:
This descriptive case study investigated African American and Hispanic parents' values of education and how these values impacted their children's academic achievement. The purpose of this research was to impact educator practices and initiatives regarding parent involvement. The data collected in the study by way of documents, questionnaires, and interviews revealed that parents value education and believe that it is a stepping stone to social and economic benefits which are necessary in life. The data revealed that parents see their role in their children's education as paramount to their children's academic success. They take ownership of their children's education and rely on the school to provide rigorous learning that will translate into future success. Finally, the study revealed that because these parents have adopted a strong, intrinsic belief in their role in promoting their children's academic achievement, they have little concern with issues of race, multiculturalism, or socio-economics. These parents simply rely on the school for strong academic content to aid in their children's success in the real world where an education translates into a good job and good earning potential.
