Abstract/Summary:
This pilot study assessed the efficacy of Finding Om, a yoga and discussion-based treatment, in alleviating binge episodes in people who met criteria for Binge Eating Disorder (BED). Ten subjects between the ages of 19-47 attended a weekly hour-long yoga class for 10 weeks; 7 also participated in a 30 minute discussion immediately afterwards. Changes were measured using instruments including the Eating Disorders Examination Questionnaire with Instructions and a demographic survey. Results were statistically significant, with objective binge episodes decreasing from 4.75 to 1.98 per week (t = 5.78, df = 9, p = .001). This study extends the research on yoga as a therapeutic modality. It also suggests the validity of a cost-effective, noninvasive, easily replicable and groundbreaking yoga treatment developed specifically to treat BED.
