Abstract/Summary:
The primary purpose of the study was to determine whether perceived family-of-origin health was correlated to marital satisfaction in Protestant Haitian American couples. A purposive sample was obtained and consisted of 70 individuals (35 couples). Subjects completed a demographic questionnaire, the Family-of-Origin-Scale (FOS), the Marital Satisfaction Inventory-Revised (MSI-R), and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (DAS). The internal consistency of the FOS, MSI-R and DAS was established supporting the use of the instruments with a Haitian-American population. Correlation coefficients comparing the FOS, MSI-R, and DAS, along with FOS discrepancy scores to the MSI-R, were obtained. A multiple regression analysis (MRA) determined which demographic variables significantly predicted marital satisfaction as reflected by MSI-R scores. An independent samples test was used to test for significance of differences between means of husbands and wives on the MSI-R. The findings are discussed, along with implications for future research.
