Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation is comprised of a Preface, Translation, Works Cited, and an Appendix. The first treats the language, method, form and characteristics, and the ancient and modern histories of the Puggalapannatti and the Puggalapannatti-at&dotbelow;t&dotbelow;hakatha which belong to the Mahavihara school of Theravada Buddhism.; The second is an English translation of the 'Matikavan&dotbelow;n&dotbelow;ana' and the 'Niddesavan&dotbelow;n&dotbelow;ana' of the Puggalapannatti-at&dotbelow;t&dotbelow;hakatha , a source book about ancient Indian individuality which frequently makes known the steadiness with which an individual in the workaday world has grasped by way of body, speech, and mind the attitudes, beliefs, and practices as established in the Puggalapannatti.; The third is a contribution to the bibliography of Middle Indo-Aryan (ca. 500 BCE to 1000 CE) language, literature, and culture which was compiled during the studying and translating of the text.; The fourth is a table of concordant passages from the Suman˙galavilasini, Manorathapuran&dotbelow;i, and the Puggalapannatti-at&dotbelow;t&dotbelow;hakatha .
