Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation integrated two theories and used this integration to develop a psychoeducational group treatment model for adolescents with behavior problems. The theories chosen for integration were Bowen Family Systems Theory (also known as Bowen Theory - BT) and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET). A literature review was conducted on the treatment of adolescent behavior problems looking at peer and familial influence, RET treatment, BT treatment, and other current successful treatment models. This research was used to establish the key elements for successful treatment of adolescents, which were deemed to he peer and familial influence and individual development. RET and BT were chosen because the integration of these two theories seemed to address the elements necessary for a comprehensive and successful treatment of this population.; The integration was based on the premise that individuals, through interaction within their family system and their life experiences, develop the thought processes they use to navigate through life. Therefore, the treatment model is designed to show participants how their family system has influenced how they respond to the world and then show them how they can reprogram their thoughts to respond differently.; Using this integration, a workbook and manual were created to facilitate the learning and application of the theoretical concepts, The workbook and manual are for a four-session program, which begins with teaching participants concepts and then helps with applying them to personal situations using group discussions, workbook, and homework activities.; Challenges, limitations, and future development of the program are discussed as well as next steps for research.
