Entrenched between contradictory traditional and western values, francophone African Muslims have adopted opposing attitudes and customs. They take refuge in their secular practices that predate both Islam and the Coran, which they have misread, in order to justify polar interpretations. Contradictory interpretations can be argued using the same religious act and the same verse from the Coran. Such incoherence prevents emancipation of society. The opposition between Islam and modernity empowers those for whom tradition (not necessarily religion) denotes a privileged position. The hypocrisy of certain followers of the Coran reflects a superficial interpretation of religious precepts and reveals the fear of Muslim lawmakers who follow the letter but violate the spirit of the Word. |
