Abstract/Summary:
As the U.S. classroom becomes increasingly diverse, mainstream educators are faced with determining the best practices for all students. One particular group of diverse students that is becoming more evident in our classrooms today is the English Language Learner (ELL). Many mainstream educators have ELL children in their classrooms for a large portion of the day and are not adequately prepared nor have the knowledge to effectively instruct these students in the mainstream classroom (Echevarria, Vogt, & Short, 2004). Sheltered instruction based on Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) model components has shown to have benefits for the English language learner and can be implemented in the mainstream classroom (2004). This quasi-experimental study determined the effects of sheltered instruction on the Virginia Standards of Learning in mathematics and reading taken by English language learners. The results have shown that sheltered instruction has had a positive impact on learning for the English language learner in the area of mathematics, but further evidence is needed in the area of reading.
