Abstract/Summary:
Throughout the history of computer-aided design, digital tools have been developed in variety to assist a designer during the design process. With the tremendous improvement in computer technology, CAD systems as well enhanced their functions and capabilities for designers to extend their imagination and creativity through different ways. However, most recent commercial software is developed for designers to quickly reproduce their design result, or analyze elements of their developing projects. Designers still spend a great amount of time solving design problems, which include site analysis, space planning, and architectural form study, known as "schematic design".; In spite of this software development trend, some researchers have been commonly interested in exploring the possibilities of space-planning technology during the last thirty years. These researchers have focused on finding the optimized result of space-planning from different aspects of efficiency, methodologies, and considering different kind of data. The results of this research demonstrated the ability of computer calculation to generate workable results, to present two-dimensional space adjacency diagrams or stacking plans that suggest optimized space layouts.; To utilize the research of space planning optimization and three dimensional form studies, the author developed a solution that proposing three dimensional architectural forms from optimized space layout or preferential alteration by architects. This development includes the research and analysis of design method and space planning procedures, space bubble diagram representations for space adjacencies, spatial dynamic behaviors, and three dimensional architectural form generations, which is named Space Planning Design Advisor (SPDA) system.; Extensive evaluations for the SPDA system and interviews were conducted by the author to practice architects and interior designers. Throughout the process, the author recognized the space of improvements in SPDA from designers' stand of points, and collected the suggestions regarding future developments of SPDA.; In the conclusion, the author listed the achievement of the research and SPDA development, several potential research topics and developments that based on SPDA system are listed as well. In addition, the author discovered during the interviews that the SPDA can be beneficial to architectural programming students to visually recognize the spatial relationships, as well as inexperienced architects. Furthermore, it offers the experienced architects or interior designers to discover new design concept or space layout.
