Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation examines the current site conditions and operations at the Stung Mean Chey Disposal Site (SMCDS) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It studies the recycling process administered by waste pickers and the redevelopment potentials that a landfill remediation could provide. Bamboo harvested from plantations is used as a renewable source of building material. New housing types adopt architectural and structural ideas of bamboo, rammed earth, and traditional Khmer building construction. Low income and densification are discussed as being products of urban migration and insufficient infrastructure. An infrastructural network, low-income housing, a solid waste management facility, a bamboo plantation, and a sewage treatment facility are developed through landfill remediation and strategic phasing of an overall master plan.
