Abstract/Summary:
No Child Left Behind, decreasing population in rural areas, loss of financial support from local, state and federal sources, and growing demand to prepare the students for a twenty-first century world of employment are all reasons that rural districts are forced to face traumatic decisions that are affecting both their students and their communities. This historical case study examined the topic of the deactivation of a high school. The second purpose was to look at the social and emotional impact of deactivation upon a small rural community.
