With the transformation of the world economy from industrial-oriented economy to service-oriented economy,service-embedded manufacturing has become an important direction for the transformation and upgrading of manufacturing industries, and service innovation has also become an important source of competitive advantage for manufacturing enterprises.China’s manufacturing industry is shifting from high-speed development to high-quality development, and is in a critical period of transformation and upgrading. However, the lack of innovation resources and the backwardness of service innovation are serious problems faced by Chinese manufacturing enterprises in the process of servitization. Therefore, how to integrate key external organizations such as customers and suppliers, widely absorb external resources and carry out innovative composites with existing resources to improve service innovation performance is a common concern for Chinese service-embedded manufacturing enterprises. This study focuses on the core issue of how service-embedded manufacturing enterprises can improve service innovation performance through external organization integration.Firstly, the exploratory multi-case study is used to explore the influences mechanism of external organization integration on service innovation performance. Then, based on the existing related research,a deeper theoretical discussion is carried out, more detailed research hypotheses are proposed, and a conceptual model is constructed. Finally, statistical analysis is conducted on 251 questionnaire survey data, empirically testing the aforementioned research hypotheses, and discussing the empirical results in detail.Drawing on the above research, four conclusions can be presented as follows:(1)Both customer integration and supplier integration have a positive impact on financial and nonfinancial performance of service innovation.Furthermore, the interaction of customer integration and supplier integration has a positive impact on non-financial performance of service innovation, but has no impact on financial performance;(2)Customer integration and supplier integration not only directly affect the service innovation performance, but also indirectly affect the service innovation performance through the compositional capability. That is,the compositional capability is the mediator of customer integration(supplier integration)and service innovation performance;(3)Under the moderating effect of service orientation, the relationship between customer integration and service innovation performance is dynamic.Specifically, service orientation would strengthen the positive impact of customer integration on service innovation performance;(4)Under the moderating effect of environmental uncertainty, the impact path of “external organization integration—compositional capability—service innovation performance” is also dynamically.Specifically, environmental uncertainty not only positively modertes the relationship between compositional capability and service innovation performance, but also enhances the mediation effects of compositional capability, that is,there exists a moderated mediation.Compared with the existing research, this research has the following innovations :(1)From the new theoretical perspective of composition-based view, the mediating role of compositional capability between external organization integration and service innovation performance is proposed and verified;(2)Taking service orientation and environmental uncertainty as moderators, this study deeply describes the dynamic complexity of the relationship between external organization integration and service innovation performance;(3)Based on servitization of manufacturing enterprises, the relationship between external organization integration and service innovation performance is explored more specifically from the subdivision dimension. The findings expands the theoretical perspective of external organization integration and manufacturing enterprise service innovation research, enriches the service innovation research of manufacturing enterprises and open service innovation theory, and broadens the research field of compasiton-based view.At the same time, this study suggests that manufacturing enterprises should build an open innovation network and actively integrate external organizations in the service innovation process. Moreover,in order to make service innovation benefit more from external organization integration, manufacturing enterprises should not only pay attention to the matching between organization integration and external environment, but also improve the compositional capability and service orientation level within the enterprise.
