Along with the development of retail industry,the activities of retail industry innovation are very active.Comparing with the abundant innovation practices in the retail industry,the researches on its economic effects still fall behind.There is no consensus on connotation and mechanism of retail industry innovation;more researches on retail industry innovation economic effect need to be done.Evolving with the effects of retail industry innovation,this dissertation develops in the order of “connotation-measurement-economic effect”.Firstly,the connotation as well as the micro and mesoscopic mechanism of retail industry innovation has been discussed with comparative static analysis method on the basis of innovation theory,industry competition theory and distribution economic theory.Secondly,the retail industry innovation measurement indicators are established and tested by the newly developed National Enterprise Innovation Survey data from 2016 to 2017.Thirdly,industrial organization theory,consumption dual growth theory and trading externality theory are used to analyze the effects of retail industry innovation on retail industry performance,consumption growth,and output growth respectively.Meanwhile,according to the sample characteristics,the effects are empirically verified by using the panel calibration standard error(PCSE)regression method and the feasible generalized least square(FGLS)regression method.The study found:(1)From the production function of innovation essence,retail industry innovation means to establish a new retail industry production function involving retailer innovation and retailer innovation diffusion.The internal and external retailer innovation model indicates that the fundamental logic of retailer innovation is the retailer external innovation of increasing the market demands and retailer internal innovation of decreasing the operating costs.Retailer external innovation forms the retail industry external innovation,and retailer internal innovation forms the retail industry internal innovation.Further theoretical analysis shows that retail industry external innovation has synthetic amplification effect,while retail industry internal innovation has both synthetic amplification effect and synthetic fallacy effect.(2)The retail industry external innovation can be measured by the proportion of retail enterprises that have successfully implemented service innovation or marketing innovation.Retail industry internal innovation can be measured by the proportion of the enterprises that have successfully implemented process innovation and organizational innovation.The results of retail industry innovation measurement shows that retail industry has higher external innovation level than internal innovation level,and the retail industry in the western region has more active innovation in China.The retail industry in the provinces along “the Belt and Road” has higher innovation level than other regions.(3)The retail industry innovation has significant effects on the performance of retail industry and consumption.At present,retail industry external innovation in China reveals mainly the synthetic amplification effects,which can significantly promote the retail industry performance and the consumption growth.Though synthetic amplification effect exists in retail industry internal innovation,on the circumstances of the low market concentration of retail industry in China,retail industry internal innovation has further reduced the industry entry barriers and promoted the development of small and medium-sized retailers,which is negative to integrate resources and achieve economies of scale in retail industry.Furthermore,the investment influx causes insufficient capacity utilization.Retail industry innovation promotes output growth by stimulating productive labor.Under the assumption that the retail industry has high market concentration,the general equilibrium model based on the production externality theory indicates that retail industry external innovation helps to meet people’s commodity needs.Retail industry internal innovation and profit sharing can meet people’s income needs.Both of them have incentive effects on productive labor and output growth.The main marginal contributions of this dissertation are as follows: firstly,it further clarifies the connotation of retail industry innovation and its micro and meso mechanism;secondly,it measures retail industry innovation based on new indicators and new data in China.Thirdly,it systematically examine the economic effects of retail industry innovation from the perspectives of retail industry performance,consumption and output.
