competive advantage attributing to the recongfuration move inspired by the diffusion of n,ew cormmunication and internet technology. However,Chinese firms often fail to achieve business model innovations.First, most of firms fail to find the approach for successful business model innovation according to competitive environment.Second, firms often fail to leverage open learning to promote business model innovation.Third, firms are often lack of dynamic capability for business model innovation because most of firms have been pursuing resource-based completion.Unfortunately, previous literature fails to resolve above problems because of four research gaps.First, conflict views still exist in extant literature on the direct effects of business model innovation on firm performance, which call further exploration on the contignent condition.Especially, the role of environmental condition in China is under examined.Second, previous literature fails to identify fit learning approach to promote business model innovation.Third, the way by which dynamic capability affect business model innovation is under examined.Fourth, extant literature offers little insights on the interactive effects between external learning and dynamic capability.Addressing on the research gaps and practical problems, this study investigates the effects of nolvelty-centered and efficiency-centered business model innovations on firm performance and also the moderating effects of competitive intensity and institutional ineffiency.Furthermore, this study investigates the effects of both intra-and extra-industry learning on two types of business model innovations. Finally, this study identifies internal resource reconfigaturaion capability and alliance management capability and examines the moderating effects of theses two types of dynamic capabilities on the effects or external learning on business model innovations.18 hypothese are proposed and examined with data base from 238 +firms in China. This study finds that:first, both nolvelty-centered and efficiency-centered business model innovations have positive effects on firm performance.Furthermore, the effect of nolvelty-centered business model innovation is stronger than that of efficiency-centered business model innovation.Second, competitive intensity and institution inefficiency have different moderating effects on the relationship between business model innovation and firm performance.Specifically, competitive intensity strengthens the effect of efficiency-centered business model innovation on performance while weakens the effect of novelty-centered business model on firm performance.Institution ineff-iency weakens the effects of both nolvelty-centered and efficiency-centered business model innovations on firm performance;Third,nolvelty-centered and efficiency-centered business model innovations need different types of external learning. We find that intra-industry learning has positive effect on effiecency-centered business model innovation while has negative effect on novelty-centered business model innovation.Extra-industry learning has positive effects on both nolvelty-centered and efficiency-centered business model innovations.Extra-industry learning has stronger effects on efficiency-centered business model innovation.Forth, this study finds that internal resource recongfigration capability and alliance management capability have different moderating effects of external learning on business model innovation.Sepcifically, both internal resource recongfigration capability and alliance management capability strengthen the negative effects of intra-industry learning on novelty-centerd business model innovation while alliance management capability strengthens the positive effect of intra-industry learning on effiency-centered business model innovation. Both internal resource recongfigration capability and alliance management capability strengthens the positive effects of extra-industry learning on novelty-centerd and effiency-centered business model innovations. This research contributes to extant literature in three ways.First, this study identifies the fit environmental conditions for novelty-centered and efficiency-centered business model innovations by investigating the moderating effects of competition intensity and institutional inefficiency.Although extant literature achieves a concensus that business model innovation turns out to be crucial source of competitive advantage in connected market, conflicts still exist on the direct effects of business model innovation on firm performance.Addressing on this gap, this study extends business model innovation literature from value capature perspective by investigating the effects of competition intensity and institutional inefficiency.Furthermore, this research also enriches business model innovation in transition economy.Second, this study investigates the different effects of both intra-and extra-industry learning on business model innovation.Although organization learning perspective guides the business model innovation literature stream, extant litteratre fails to identify the specific types of organizational learning to promote business model innovation.Adressing on this gap, this study unpacks external learning as intra-and extra-industry learning and examines their effects on different types of business model innovations. This study shows that intra-and extra-lernings have different effects on business model innovations.Third, this study identifies the fit dynamic capabilities with business model and analyzes the interactive effects with external learing on business model innovation.By investigating dynamic capability and organizational learning theories this research clarifies the vague classification of dynamic capability in business model literature and the way through which dynamic capability enhance business model innovation. This study finds that internal resource recongfiguration and alliance management capability have different moderating effects on the relationships between external leanings and business model innovations. | |
