Research On Clustering Development Of Pharmaceutical Industry In Yanbian

The pharmaceutical industry as one of the high-tech industries is characterized by its high added-values,high risk,high rate of return,and bright prospects.The development of the pharmaceutical industry cluster is based on the development of medical equipment industry,pharmaceutical packaging,logistics and distribution,which are also the major functional structures of pharmaceutical industry.The developing mode of industrial clusters which has promoted the sustainable development of regional economic growth also marks the maturity of pharmaceutical industry,and becomes more obviously the pillar industry in the region.Under this circumstance,to promote the development of the pharmaceutical industry is a strategic option for the developed regions to stay ahead and the developing countries to take second-mover advantage.Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture(hereinafter referred to as "Yanbian")is situated in Changbai Mountain’s hinterland.By virtue of the unique and rich natural medicinal resources from animals and plants in Changbai Mountain,pharmaceutical industry here therefore has developed into a vital pillar industry of the local economy,stimulating local economic and social development.Located in the east of Jilin Province,close to the border of China and North Korea,Yanbian is an important window of Northeastern China to the outside world as well as the settlement of the largest Korean ethnic group in China.This location endows the development of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry with advantages,helping it grow into a potential industry in Yanbian.After years of development,the pharmaceutical industry is listed as the key industry supported by the local government and plays a major part in the local economy.The pharmaceutical industry clusters centered on Aodong Group and Huakang Pharmaceutical Company gradually come into being,led by a few large enterprises,and supplemented by the middle and small-sized enterprises.It could be seen from the domestic and overseas researches and practices that pharmaceutical industry clusters are the ideal choice for the sustainable developing of local pharmaceutical industry.This mode has been regarded as a key motive for developed areas to build competitive advantages,and an effective strategic tool for the less developed areas to realize the leap-forward development and narrow the gap between underdeveloped areas and developed areas.This thesis focuses on the research of Yanbian pharmaceutical industry clusters.It can enrich the theoretical applications and researches of this industry in China’s ethnic minority areas,and guide such practices and explorations in order to enhance industrial competitiveness.From the perspective of ethnology,pharmaceutical industry is an essential part of Korean ethnic culture,with certain implication in regional culture and ethnical sentiment.Economically,the coordinated development of pharmaceutical industry and other related industries are of great significance for the promotion of ethnical culture,the development of regional economy and the national unity in ethnical region.Based on the history and status quo of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry,according to industry clusters’ theories at home and abroad,the thesis firstly analyzes the problems of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry clusters,and then puts forward the factors that restricts further growth of clustering of pharmaceutical industry.Finally,the development orientation of future pharmaceutical industry clustering is therefore settled down.The thesis consists of five chapters.Chapter One is the introduction.This chapter is the basic one of this thesis.It begins with the research background,purpose and significance,content and methods,innovations and deficiencies.Then it gives an overview of domestic and overseas research results of pharmaceutical industry clusters,establishing the theoretical framework for this thesis.Chapter Two states the related definitions and theories.This part acts as the theoretical basis of this thesis.First,by defining industrial clusters,it makesclear their feature and denotation in regional development.Second,it introduces the theory of Marshall’s industrial district to analyze incentives of the enterprise’s agglomeration in geography and space from the perspective of external economic benefits and figure out the relationships between the external economic benefits and industry clusters’development.Third,it focuses on the analysis of Porter’s industrial cluster theory and reviews Michael Porter Diamond Model.Forth,it explains Perroux’s theory of regional growth pole and analyzes its relationship with industry clusters.Finally,it comes up with the theory of dynamism of industrial clusters which explains a central role and an important component in the study of industrial clusters development.Thus,it provides a theoretical basis for the development of pharmaceutical industry clusters in Yanbian.Chapter Three discusses about the status quo and existing problems in pharmaceutical industry development in Yanbian.It records in detail the elementary conditions of pharmaceutical industry development in Yanbian.First,it introduces the history and current situations of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry development,presenting the realistic background of pharmaceutical industry clusters.The strategical layout of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry is analyzed through methods of field investigations and system analyses,as well as a comprehensive analysis of the layout of pharmaceutical parks.A dialectic analysis is made on factors of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry development.Based on Porter’s Diamond Model Theory,this part discusses the contemporary relations and statues of the factors in the development of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry from six aspects:production factors,demand conditions,related supporting industries,enterprise strategies,opportunities and governments.Then this part is focused on the phased investigations in Aodong Pharmaceutical Park in Dunhua,through targeted interviews with the principals and staffs,revealing in depth a series of problems such as business management and developing mode.It indicates that Yanbian pharmaceutical industry clusters are driven by a few big companies and supplemented by small and medium-size enterprises.Finally,combined with the above comprehensive researches,the thesis reveals the main problems existing in the development of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry clustering:the low concentration of industry due to small-scale companies;the deficiency of funds;low-end products;the shortage of technical personnel;lack of governmental support.Chapter Four analyzes the motive and mechanism of the development of Yanbian pharmaceutical industry.After a review of the theories at home and abroad,in view of very few quantitative research on pharmaceutical industry in the ethnic areas in China,and based on Porter’s Diamond Model Theory,an indicator system is established.This chapter presents the main factors which influenced the development of industry clusters in Yanbian Prefecture,by way of factor analysis and SPSS calculation.On the basis of factor analysis,this part ranks seven cities and towns in Yanbian(excluding Hunchun)according to the evaluation factors,and briefly discusses the development in each city.The factors may vary in different ethnical areas with diverse culture recourses.Through empirical research,combined with the particularity and reality in Yanbian’ s industry,this part puts forward the influential factors which comprise the dynamic mechanism,namely,natural resources,ethnical culture,specialization,strategy,human resource,technical innovation and government.The interaction and interdependence of these factors form the dynamic network mechanism of Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry clusters.Chapter Five concludes the strategic choice and countermeasures for Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry clustering development.This chapter is the conclusion as well as the content of the pharmaceutical industry supporting policy.Based on the above research,by way of SWOT analytic approach,this part further analyzes the advantages and disadvantages,opportunities and challenges for the pharmaceutical industry in Yanbian,underlying the strategic decisions for the pharmaceutical industry development.The review of cluster theories,the analysis of the status quo of the industry,the construction of motive mechanism,further deepen the research on main problems concerning Yanbian’s pharmaceutical industry development,and thus corresponding measures are put forward.
