The energy-extensive consumption problem has become prominent for Data Center Networks(DCNs)increasingly.For the sustainable development of data centers,network energy conservation has already become the issue that need to be addressed urgently.The energy conservation for DCNs can be achieved by energy-aware network resource planning and scheduling.Soft-ware Defined Networking(SDN)meets the requirements of network flexible scheduling and fine-grained control,and thus leveraging SDN is conducive to the optimal management of energy consumption.The aim of this research is the SDN-based optimization of DCN energy conservation.Leveraging the ad-vantages of SDN,we study the elastic-topology-based energy conservation im-provement for data plane,combining with the consideration of control plane,and deeply analyze the distributed energy-conserving mechanism for scalabil-ity.The main achievements and innovations are as follows:1.An improved energy-conserving mechanism via elastic data plane of Software Defined DCNs(SDN-DCNs)is studied.As for the inherent problem of greedy policy in the existing methods,an heuristic method based on genetic algorithm is presented.Combining with the fine-grained network scheduling advantages of SDN and the more detailed energy-consuming model of DCN switches,a modified hybrid genetic algorithm is designed to find the optimal solution.With the support of high computational performance of SDN con-troller,a better energy-conserving scheme for data plane can be achieved.The simulation results show that the data plane energy-conserving effect is further improved.2.The energy-conserving mechanism via elastic multi-controller SDN-DCNs is studied,combining with the consideration of control plane.As for the problem in the existing methods without considering control plane,a holistic DCN elastic-topology mechanism for both two planes is proposed.The neces-sity of control plane energy conservation with multiple controllers is analyzed based on the power profile of controllers,and the corresponding policy is de-ployed,combined with the data plane energy conservation considering flow split.A Bin-Packing model is designed to achieve good control plane energy conservation,and the energy-conserving mechanism of the two planes linkage can be established.The simulation results show that the SDN-DCN energy-conserving effect is obviously improved.3.A distributed energy-conserving mechanism for multi-domain SDN-DCNs is studied.As for the problem in the existing studies without the in-depth and systematic distributed energy-conserving algorithm model,an elastic-topology-based distributed energy-conserving method is proposed for multi-domain SDN-DCNs.The necessity of distributed energy conservation is analyzed,and the distributed energy-efficient routing model is designed.A distributed energy-efficient routing scheme for inter-domain flows is presented,and the distributed energy conservation can be achieved,combined with the distributed control plane energy conservation.The simulation results show that the calculative efficiency is obviously improved,and the effectiveness of global energy con-servation is also guaranteed.
