Since the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet,great changes have taken place in all aspects under highly attention and support of the government.Taking the development in cultural and artistic fields as an example,remarkable achievements have been made both in the protection and inheritance of traditional classical culture and in the creation and dissemination of contemporary social culture.Among them,Tibetan instrumental suite The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land launched in 1980 s is one of the outstanding Tibetan musical works and one of the typical examples that did successful exploration in protecting,inheriting and innovating Tibetan classic music.Creatively,the composing thoughts of Tibetan instrumental suite The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land employed the combination of traditional Tibetan music elements with professional western music techniques;the structural patterns of the suite explored the combination of traditional Tibetan music forms with professional western music genres;and the performing style of the suite adopted the combination of traditional Tibetan musical instruments with modern western orchestra.The performance of The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land both at home and abroad has attracted strong responses and achieved resounding success.The successful creation and performance of The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snowland marks the achievement of government's efforts in cultivating professional Tibetan music composing talents and performing talents,which demonstrates both practical significance and historical significance.The successful creation and performance of the suite enables the classical Tibetan music to combine traditional elements with modern forms,to go out of the plateau and to perform in parts of the country,to go out of the nation and to make communications with parts of the world,which is a powerful response to the so-called claim of “Tibetan culture destruction” by some foreign hostile forces and foreign separatist forces.This doctoral dissertation is to fulfill musical analysis and academic research on Tibetan Music Instrumental Suite “The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land”,so as to show,in the perspective of music,the achievements in development of national undertakings since new China and reform-opening.Meanwhile,the research also reveals the achievements in development of social cultures and arts since peaceful liberation and democratic reforms in Tibet,and reform-opening as well.The whole dissertation consists of six parts.The introduction of the paper mainly introduces topic selection,topic significance,literature review and research methods,which consist of the guidance of the whole dissertation.The first chapter provides an overview of large-scaled instrumental music pieces with Tibetan-themes and Tibetan-genres,created for either western orchestra,or Chinese traditional orchestra,or traditional Tibetan musical instruments.The summarization of these music works aims at defining the category and scope of the presently-studied Tibetan instrumental suite The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land.The second chapter interprets the creative thoughts of The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land.Through revealing origins of the ceremony,enlightenment of Auspicious Heaven and introspection of the professional artists,this chapter analyzing the ceremony and its origins,the reference works and their characteristics,as well as the major composers and their relations with this suite.The third chapter conducts the musical analysis and academic exploration into The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land,in which the thoroughly-detailed analysis and exploration on the composing techniques of the suite are managed in three aspects involving the music structure,music style and music language of the suite.The fourth chapter discusses the creative achievements of The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land.The analysis with multiple perspectives,multiple views and multiple levels reveals that the success of The Grand Prayer Ceremony in Snow-land attribute to the benefits from breakthrough of ideas and thoughts,benefits from the combination of methods and techniques,and benefits from inheritance and innovation.Finally,the conclusion part of this dissertation puts forward the view that the prosperity of contemporary music creation ought to inherit the classical traditional culture,draw lessons from human civilization and innovate cultural development,so as to provide references for the creation of large-scale instrumental music with Tibetan themes or Tibetan genres in the future.
