Turning is the problem of conversion in the field of religion.Examining the problem of conversion through the field is because the individual value choice must come from something edifying and make the choice in the field.Based on Bourdieu’s field theory and qualitative research methods of participation and interviews, this paper chooses a certain area in Northeast China as the location of field investigation, and tries to analyze the complexity of the conversion problem through individual touching field,in field and switching field as clues.Area H,located in the northeast of China,is in the process of urbanization. It has a profound history and culture,at the same time,it can accommodate foreign cultures and present a multicultural pattern. Then,a multireligious environment emerges, including all the religions types in China, such as Catholicism,Protestantism,Buddhism,Taoism,Islam and folk religion. However, believers with clear belief status only account for a small part of the total number of people in the region, and have not formed a monopoly situation. In the face of uncertain beliefs, the opportunities for the masses to believe in any religion are equal,so there are a lot of spaces for conversion."Conversion" in China has its own complexity which is different from that of Western society. Therefore,we must begin with the analysis of the field, from the local historical and cultural background to the history and current situation of each religion, from social factors to family ethics factors, from the operation rules of the field to various elements of the field to analyze the possibility of conversion so as to find the relationship between the field and the turn. The article is divided into six parts. The introduction and the first chapter are the background introduction of the research content. The introduction mainly explains the origin of the problem, literature review, definition of related concepts, research methods and significance. The first chapter is an overview of the selection of the field, that is,an investigation of the interviewer’s life field, from the local historical and cultural background to the specific situation of the religious field. The relationship between religious fields and other fields is used to understand the field characteristics of Area H.In the second chapter, starting from the operational rules of the field, the specific action of turning around is interpreted logically and practically from the aspects of habits, interests and capital. That is to say,the field provides some possibility and feasibility for conversion. In the third chapter, according to the personal and ritual ways in which individuals touch the field may produce different attitudes towards beliefs and different conversion results.Conversion is accomplished through the interaction between the field and the actors.Chapter Four focuses on two unavoidable problems among the actors in Area H,that is,consanguinity and utilitarianism. From the basic types of life experiences, such as marriage-family relationship and personal crisis, which everyone will experience,we can see how to make a certain connection between individual experience and conversion, which is the result of field superposition.Chapter Five examines how the actors conduct the most thorough conversion through a religious ritual of "abandoning idols".Describing its ritual process, exploring its historical basis to untangle this phenomenon, the way of this thoroughly conversion is achieved through different interpretations of idols. The last chapter is the conclusion and reflection part of the paper.Through the analysis of the empirical data,it is concluded that a cultural field has become rich and diverse when the different civilizations entered, thus transforming the spiritual pedigree of local beliefs, becoming an option and making a possibility of conversion for western religions in this field. At the same time, the actors conversely transformed the field, changed Chinese tolerance towards religion, and changed the actors’ identity for believing but not belonging.Secondly, conversion is an individual choice after the field superposition.Even in the face of the same situation, there are totally different conversion results, which include individual differences and contingencies, but also the rational choice for individuals to settle their occasional life through constant beliefs. Finally, conflict theory, religious dialogue theory, secularization theory and religious market theory is analyzed by the field theory and the applicability of these theories in Chinese culture and context is bounded. Therefore,it is necessary to carry out empirical research on conversion, and it is also an important dimension to understand the Sinicization of religion. |
