Research On The Artistic Style Of Ligeti's Music

The Hungarian—Austrian composer Gyorgy Ligeti was one of the most influential composers in the field of Western music during the twentieth century.As a highly prestigious composer on the international music scene in the 1960 s,Ligeti enjoyed a very high reputation.His works,including opera,orchestral,choral,concerto,chamber music,were performed extensively in various countries in the world and also brought him many international composer awards which include the "Composers' Nobel Prize" — the Grawemeyer Award given by the University of Louisville in the United States.Ligeti,who had an important influence on the development of western music in the 20 th century,is undoubtedly an important object of the study of modern art history and his unique artistic deserves thoroughly study and research.Like other modernist artists,Ligeti pursued the autonomy of art,which works in concert with the modern art trend in both the concept and practice.Thus,the understanding and analysis of his music should not be limited to the perspective of the history of music.Instead,interpretation and analysis should be based on the development of art history so as to give overall summary and evaluation of his artistic style and its significance.This thesis is just based on the broader scope of art history to study Ligeti's music art.After the 18 th and 19 th centuries,which focused on the study of artistic content,from the second half of the 19 th century,the study of art history gradually divided into three dimensions: art sociology,artistic psychology,and artistic stylistics.Among them,art stylistics studies the core style issues that prevail in all artistic categories,and is the fundamental dimension in art research.Art stylistics involves many aspects of the style such as the formation,composition,evolution,distinction and evaluation,which makes it a systematic method with strong explanatory power to modern arts.Drawing on the research methods of artistic stylistics,it is possible to give a comprehensive and systematic summary of Ligeti's life,better excavate its artistic spirit,and explore the epochal character and nationality of its artistic style.Combining the developmental veins of Western modern art,this thesis reveals the inner connection between Ligeti's music and various art categories and studies Ligeti's artistic style with reference to times,regions and schools,as well as summarizes its ideological roots and theoretical system.This thesis attempts to study the music of Ligeti from the perspective of art stylistics,and puts forward two key issues: first,how to use the theories and methods of art stylistics to interpret and analyze Ligeti's music in the context of modern art times;second,how to establish the theoretical frame work of art style in the academic discipline of art stylistics.Therefore,pitching at the angle of art stylistics,this thesis discussed the origin,connotation and application of art stylistics,and constructs the basic framework of music artistic style;then summarized the cases of Ligeti's musical art style from the four aspects of individual,times,nationality and history.By studying the evolution of Ligeti's artistic style during his early,middle,and late stages,and combined with methods of formal analysis,the thesis discusses his artistic styles in different periods from the aspects of composition and characteristics.In addition,his creation concept is put into the background of modern philosophical and aesthetic thoughts,as well as the artistic trends,and it is concluded that Ligeti's music owns the character of chart—draw style.At last,some comments on the artistic style of Ligeti's music are made,including his worldwide influence,and the spirit and values of the times in his music are also discussed.Based on this,the times spirit and sense of form of modern art are further questioned.Taking Ligeti as the research object,this thesis applies the study method of art stylistics to a specific art category,which proves that the method of art stylistics is not only suitable for plastic arts,but also appropriate for music.Researches on artistic style of music should draw more attention of the academic circles.This thesis makes a preliminary attempt of music research by applying the art stylistic theories,which concerns the formation,evolution of styles and form analysis,to the analysis of musical works and realizes the actual practice of art stylistics in the field of music studies.On the one hand,this practice adds to the content for the study of Ligeti's artistic style;on the other hand,it also tries to further develop the theories of art stylistics,paving an effective path for the application of art stylistics in music.It is hoped that the study of this thesis will provide a new perspective for Ligeti's artistic style,as well as the study of art history and music history;enrich the research content of art stylistics theories;provide useful reference for the art history researchers;and attract more scholars to attach importance to the study of music using the methods of art stylistics.
