Under the guide of literary theory, the thesis targets an influential Chinese contemporary writer to do the inter-disciplinary study in the theoretical framework of translation aesthetics,medio-translatology and readers’ acceptance theory to explore the translating, spreading and accepting of contemporary Chinese literary works in the overseas world.Literary works are the carrier of culture, reflecting all aspects of the culture. In the background of current policy of "The Belt and Road" and "Chinese Culture Going Out",it is of practical value and great significance to study the translation and spreading of Chinese contemporary writers’ outstanding works.Bi Feiyu is a standout among contemporary Chinese writers whose works are translated and accepted successfully overseas, enjoying good reputation both at home and abroad. The study of Bi Feiyu’s novel and its translation plays an instructive and referential role in the project of Chinese literature and culture "going out".This thesis targets Howard Goldblatt and Sylvia Li-chun Lin’s translation version of Bi’s three novels-The Moon Opera,Three Sisters and Massage, focusing on its translation, spreading and acceptance in the English world, mainly from the following six parts:General Introduction of Bi Feiyu’s Novels,Comparative Study of Bi’s Novels in Chinese and its English version,Translating Behavior Study,Spreading Study,Readers’ Acceptance Study, and Reflection and Outlook of Chinese Contemporary Literature "going out",with the purpose of providing a reference and method for Chinese literary works’ creation, translation and spreading in the foreign world. This thesis starts from the general characteristics of Bi Feiyu’s novels. His language is extremely special, with a distinct "Bi Feiyu tone".The theme of his novels is both universal and national. In the background of Chinese culture and special history,Bi focuses on the old,the weak, the disabled and the female, concerning their living conditions and emotional dilemmas, depicting their lives and emotions, dignity and responsibility, struggling and hardworking. His literary creation is filled with humanistic feelings, arousing common interest and promoting common acceptance among readers all over the world. The thesis makes a detailed comparative study of the Chinese and English versions of the above three novels from the aspect of language, text structure, narration and sub-text,exploring the translating strategies and methods. It is found that the translated version is greatly faithful to the original one both in content and form, which is beneficial for English readers to learn more Chinese expressions and culture, and promotes Chinese language and culture "going ou".As far as text structure is concerned, domesticating translation is applied.Based on the logic and context, long paragraphs are divided into smaller ones, and different characters’ dialogues are divided into different paragraphs, which accords with English readers’ reading habits and thinking patterns, thus faithful to the original text at a higher level, beneficial to Chinese novels’ spread and acceptance in the English-speaking world. On the basis of diachronic comparative study of the Chinese and English versions of the three novels, the paper finds that the closer the time is to the translation of the novel, the greater the proportion of literal translation and the less explanatory para-text.With Mo Yan’s winning Nobel Prize,China’s growing stronger in politics and economy, and the advancing of the strategy of "The Belt and Road" and "Chinese culture going out",China is playing a more and more important role in the world.Hence, more and more overseas readers begin to learn and understand China and Chinese culture. This paper also points out the unfaithful translations in the novel, namely under-translation and mistranslation. This paper suggests that the government should try every means to invest more manpower, material resources and finance in cultivating translation talents and translation researchers. It is effective to establish a translating platform for local translators and foreign sinologists to cooperate with each other, which can greatly reduce and even eradicate under-translation and mistranslation. The factor of human plays an important role in the effective spread of Chinese contemporary literary works in overseas world.Translator behavior research, spread research and acceptance research are the core parts of the paper, and the three parts focus on the factor of "human".The choice of novel and translation strategy, and translation process are all determined by translators.Translator’s work is the foundation and basis for the following spreading and readers’ acceptance.Literary agents, publishers and distributors also play a leading role in Chinese novels’ "going out".The study of readers’ acceptance focuses on readers and readers’ comments, which is the final evaluation and judgment of literary works’translation and spread.Through the collection, collation and statistical analysis of readers’comments on the world’s largest book network Amazon US website and the largest reading community website goodreads, this paper finds that many overseas readers are interested in Chinese literature and culture. Some readers pay attention to the universal value of novels, and others focus on Chinese culture and customs. In general, foreign readers begin to have more interests in Chinese culture and literature. The successful translation of Bi Feiyu’s novels in the English-speaking world provides a path and some reference for contemporary Chinese literary works "going out",but readers’active acceptance can not be accomplished in an action.Instead,it is a gradual and subtle process, with its own development law and acceptance rules.Novelists, translators, scholars, and literary and culture researchers need to work hard together to improve the quality of their works, introducing the most authentic, representative and influential contemporary literary works to the oversea world. |
