Owing to the First Sino-Japanese War,the Qing government was forced to sign the“Treaty of Shimonoseki”by the Japanese government.Taiwan and the mainland were forced to be separated for half a century. In view of Taiwan's obvious strategic position,Japan had occupied Taiwan for fifty years, during which it implemented a series of high-pressure colonial policies in politics, economy, culture and military, which has caused a great negative impact on Taiwan. In culture, the Japanese colonialists tried to export colonial culture to "brainwash" Taiwan people;in education, they popularize Japanese to strengthen the colonial education;in religion and customs, they restricted Chinese traditional religion while promoted Japanese Buddhism and Shinto, and required Taiwan people to adopt Japanese lifestyle;in literature and art, they controlled the publicity and propagandized Kominka literature and art.All of these measures aimed to destroy Chinese culture in Taiwan by cultural assimilation,to implant Japanese culture and transform Taiwan people's thoughts, making them "obedient citizens" who were characterized by Japanese culture,so as to reach the ultimate goal of long-term colonial rule in Taiwan.Instead,Taiwan people resist Japanese colonial culture and adhere to the traditional culture of the motherland all the time.Even though they were confronted with colonists' high-pressure cultural policies,Taiwan people well preserved Chinese culture by insisting on Chinese speaking and learning, the heritage of traditional beliefs and practices and the recording of Taiwan people's forbearance and revolt by literature. The fifty years of Japanese occupation in Taiwan is that of Taiwan people's resistance to Japanese colonial culture.Because of the tenacious vitality of Chinese culture, the conspiracy of colonizing Taiwan by Japanese culture was bound to end in failure. However,we should be fully aware that even today the negative effect caused by the past fifty years still exists,on the Island the haze of“Cultural Independencein Taiwan" still pervades, and the "Taiwan Independence" forces' attempt to cut off the Chinese cultural connection across the Straits still resurges. On the basis of strengthening the cultural identity of China, the compatriots on both sides can make creative transformation and innovative development of Chinese culture and share the time tasks of cultural awareness and cultural confidence.
