Textual connectors,as the name implies, are a kind of middle structure which connect the sentences in a text and same topic between a group of sentences function at the textual level. It is mainly used to form various inheritance relationships in topics such as time relations, unexpected relations, reversal relations, inference relations and so on,in order to achieve the linguistic effect of smooth meaning and complete structure.Textual connective elements of language are an academic research that rose in the late 1970 s in the West.It was not introduced into China until 1980 s.Although it has been studied for more than 30 years,it still has not been paid enough attention by the academic circles.Only a few books and dozens of articles have been published, and most of the studies are concentrated in the stage of modern Chinese language grammar, which inevitably leads to the unbalanced development of Chinese text linguistics and makes progress slowly. This paper combines these two questions and finds the overlap point of them——the connecting elements of the vernacular novels in Qing Dynasty, that is,based on the study of text linguistics, connecting elements and Chinese history, using the combination of qualitative analysis and quantitative description, and taking the synchronic and diachronic connection and difference of the connecting elements as the research point,to study the connecting elements of the vernacular novels in Qing Dynasty. In order to achieve the following research objectives, the following components are described comprehensively and thoroughly:(1)On the basis of previous studies,re-classifies the categories of text connectors.(2)By using ten representative novels of the Qing Dynasty as corpus for analysis to examine their position in sentences, distribution of sentence types, internal logical relations and differences.(3)Sorting out the characteristics of the development of textual connectors through the whole Qing Dynasty;(4)To try to find out the differences between vernacular Chinese in Qing Dynasty and modern Chinese. The main body of this study is divided into six chapters.Chapters 2 to 5 respectively study the different types of text connectors in the vernacular novels of the Qing Dynasty. With the introduction, the first chapter discusses the types of text connectors and the Chapter 6 conclusion,a complete research paper is formed. The introduction mainly lays the groundwork for the paper. This chapter first elaborates the reasons for choosing this topic from two aspects: language development factors and the untapped areas of the study;then it summarizes the previous achievements from the two perspectives of the definition and classification of text connectors;finally,it gives a special description of the corpus used in this paper.Chapter 1 is a further discussion of the types of text connectors.Firstly, this chapter analyses and classifies the previous scholars' research on the connective elements of discourse, and makes statistics and analysis on the connective elements of ten representative vernacular novels of the Qing Dynasty,in order to prepare for the specific study of the following components. From Chapter 2 to Chapter 5,this paper makes a comprehensive analysis of the existence of textual connective elements in Qing vernacular novels, including definitions, locations in sentences, distribution of sentences, internal logic and differences.Chapter 6,conclusion.This part summarizes the characteristics of the development of textual connective elements, makes clear the development track of textual connective elements from Qing Dynasty to modern times, and briefly states the differences between the textual connective elements of Qing Dynasty and modern times. The academic value of this study is mainly focused on two problems to be solved.Firstly, compared with other grammatical points, there are many problems in the study of text connectors, such as fewer achievements, narrow research perspectives and less detailed classification.Secondly,at present, the research on the connective elements of discourse is mainly concentrated in modern Chinese language, and the results of the research on the connective elements of the vernacular novels of the Qing Dynasty have not been seen in the scope of the author's vision. In this study,a multi-linguistic approach is used to analyze and investigate the textual connective elements in Qing Dynasty novels from a multidimensional perspective. It is hoped that this study will pave the way for a deeper study of the mechanism of the use of textual connective elements and supplement the existing studies. The application value of this study lies mainly in the combination of the study in textual connective elements and the vernacular novels of the Qing Dynasty. The function of text connectors is to make the discourse coherent, and to express some special semantic tendencies on this basis. The study of the textual connective elements in the vernacular novels of the Qing Dynasty can quickly analyze the author's implicature tendency in the whole paragraph, interpret the author's implicature, and understand the writing style of the vernacular novels of the Qing Dynasty. This study will provide basic information for other researchers in this field, and also provide some basis for other researchers in the study of novels in the Qing Dynasty and the study of the semantics of ancient and modern texts,so as to conduct more in-depth and detailed research on related topics.
