Stanley Cavell is a famous philosopher on ordinary language and spoken highly of his new explanation,which made him a representative personage of so-called “New Wittgenstein”.At the same time,Cavell is engaged to make ordinary language thought available in art and literature,his interests are too wide rage so that no one can compatible with him in that generation.Cavell is not only one of the first group of philosophers who treat movie as a crucial subject in their reaching,but also his distinguished explanation about Shakespearean tragedy has been recognized widely as fantastic works.On literature,he re-activates the transcendentalism and Perfectionism as the prime thought of American within Emerson and Poe’s writing.So,different from other ordinary language philosophers who push the ordinary language towards to scientism,Cavell makes it as a new way to recover the tradition of liberal art and its inner power of revolution.In this assertation,the literature and art thought of Cavell will be introduction and explanation in two levels.The first level focuses on his basic principle of ordinary language,the “native” of our language.The “Native” principle is about how we can get the meaning of implication of our literal meaning,it is also said that how we can get the “must” between what we say and what we mean.On the problem,according to Cavell,handling a kind of language means not handle the “meaning of words”,but handle the process of the “must mean” of the generation of implication.Instead generating between language learner and the objective meaning of language,the process happens between the learner and teacher.Through reviewing Wittgenstein’s description of prime scene of language-learning,Cavell points out that the “native” of ordinary language is build by learner and teacher in their performance of asking and response,which is a World-making activate.The available of ordinary language is about that the other must response my asking which make us get understand in our “world”,and vise versa.So,Cavell clarifies that the fundamental of ordinary language is not and objective meaning in any positivism level,but a kind of moral common sense,which make ordinary language a way to recover the esthetic common sense of people.Cavell make these kind of words as the fundamental words of ordinary: love,promise,responsibility and avoidance.This kind of ordinary thought on “world-making” leads Cavell put his eyes on performance art,like film and theater.Different from Bazin,who thought the ontology of film as a field which is uninvolved of human because of the protecting of “realreflecting” ability powered by technical improved,Cavell points out that the meaning of film ontology means the “world-making” of film and our real world is a attune activate.Films promise the possibility of world entering by a kind of institution which called “automatic projecting” by Cavell,which means a ontology media is a kind of media which can’t translate by outer agency but just enter.With the same principle of ontology,Cavell points out the roots of tragedy is about skepticism on others.The skepticism builds up a distortive world between I and other people which make our live condition in two distinctive parts,the inner and outer,which destroys the “life-world”.In Shakespearean tragedy,Cavell discovers this perspective as a common subject which is beyond the moralism of tragedy characters.Cavell will be put into a wider thought stream at that generation in the second level of this assertation,which is about that how can ordinary language to be a new critical philosophy in the new time through make a critical review of Kant.In this thought stream,the main target is the conception of “thing in itself”.Ordinary language against the recognizing strategy which is based on agnosticism.Instead of it,Ordinary language want to recover the direct recognizing method by pre-acknowledge of infinitive and general.It also means that an understanding way of Romanticism which is not transcend from Cognosciblism to agnosticism but recover the ordinary condition for the presenting of Transcendent things.According above all,Cavell treats the literature language as the fundamental institution for any other language field like philosophy,moral and politic.Through the explanation of Emerson,Poe,Coleridge and Wordsworth,Cavell points out literature is not antagonistic to philosophy,on the contrary,philosophy language’s available must be presented in its returning to literature language.Cavell makes Emerson’s “selfreliance” as the root of literature which express a prime agent of human’s incarnate activates.The function of literature language is a moment for us to get out the fixed life,put ourselves into the undecided condition to rebuild the universal propositions of our ordinary life.This creative activity which put ourselves into the prime relationship with objects is the essential of our language.So,literature language is a institution which make the privacy will leads the public,and the power and right of individuals will leads the general issue.And hiding back of it is the Stoics logic of language and Spinozism of moral,which Cavell calls it “Perfectionism”.
