Both Chinese and Vietnamese interrogative pronouns have the functions of smodifying and substituting, which refer to the unknown information and constitute the Wh questions. In addition, interrogative pronouns in Chinese and Vietnamese also have some "non-interrogative usage",also known as "derivative usage","extensional usage","flexible usage".Chinese and Vietnamese interrogative pronouns have many similarities in interrogative usage and non-interrogative usage, and there are also many interesting differences, which have the possibility and necessity of comparative research. This thesis, guided by the theories and methods of contrastive linguistics, compares and analyzes the similarities and differences between Chinese and Vietnamese interrogative pronouns in interrogative usage and non-interrogative usage,at the syntactic, semantic, pragmatic levels, etc.Find the underlying causes of these differences. The full text is divided into five parts:The first part is the introductory chapter. This part is mainly a summary of researches done by the Chinese scholars and Vietnamese scholars about interrogative pronouns. It introduces issues related to thesis such as research scope, methods, purpose and the corpus. The second part which is the second chapter is titled "Comparison between Chinese and Vietnamese interrogative pronouns system",makes further analysis on interrogative pronouns in Chinese and Vietnamese, such as the members of the system and the prototype semantic features of these members. This paper argues that Chinese interrogative pronouns essentially hide two interactive subsystem. One is the interactive subsystem based on "Shen-me",including "Shenme,Shenme ren, shenme difang, shenme shijian, shenme yuanyin...",and the second one is "Shei and etc.",it includes "Shui,na-er/nali,jishi,duoshao,zenme,zenmeyang...".These two branches constitute reciprocally the Chinese interrogative pronouns system in Chinese."Shen-me" has a very important position and role, which is the nucleus of the Chinese system of interrogative pronouns. There is not interrogative pronouns at the Vietnamese interrogative pronouns system like"Shen-me",the components of the system are relatively equal in terms of position and role.In order to facilitate the description and comparison,we propose to divide the Vietnamese interrogative pronoun system into two subsystems, one is the interrogative pronoun system of Vietnam national language, and the other one is the dialect interrogative pronoun system of central and southern dialects in Vietnam. The Chinese and Vietnamese interrogative pronouns are limited, but the interrogative word system is opened and productive in both languages. The third part includes two chapters:"The interrogative Usage of Interrogative Pronouns in Chinese and Vietnamese(I)" and "The interrogative Usage of Interrogative Pronouns in Chinese and Vietnamese(?)".According to the large corpus, contrast about asking people,things,places,time,number,level,method,cause...We studied some issues related to interrogative pronouns, such as "co-occurrence","plural expressions",etc. The thesis indicates the method of asking for "plural expressions" which is very common in Vietnamese and Chinese, expressed in many different forms such as repetition, additive, complementary etc.The fourth part includes two chapters,"Non-interrogative usage of Interrogative Pronouns in Chinese and Vietnamese(?)" and "Non-interrogative usage of Interrogative Pronouns in Chinese and Vietnamese(?)".This part mainly makes a comparative study on the non-interrogative usage of interrogative pronouns(such as arbitrary reference, indefinite reference, correlating reference and disapprobatory)on terms of syntax, semantics and pragmatics. It will clarify the role and dominace of the function words, the sentence structures in the composition of derivative usage. The thesis applies the theory of linguistic typology, cognitive linguistics that explains some similarities and differences, clarifies the influence of linguistic contact, logical thinking, national culture, pragmatic conditions and other factors to the formation of the derivative usage of interrogative pronouns in Vietnamese and Chinese. The fifth part is the "Summary" chapter. We summarize the main content of thesis, present the problems solved by the dissertation, point out new innovations,as well as the long-awaited points of study, and give some ideas about approaches and studies for the furture.
