| After the Sino-Japanese war, China and Japan signed the "Treaty of Shimonoseki", according to which Taiwan was colonized by Japan. Japan established governor’s institutions in Taiwan, and built the political, economic and cultural system based on the governor’s despotic dictatorship. In the early days of occupation, in order to consolidate the colonial rule, Taiwan government actively carried out many policies, such as the resource investigation, the arrangement of the land and forest, uniforming the currency standards, and enslaving education and so on, and established colonization foundation project. In the process of establishing the project, as an important economic resource in Taiwan, salt became the target of investigation, transformation and plunder by Taiwan colonial government. In this thesis, the author mainly discusses the colonization of salt monopoly system during the Japanese occupation period. With the research methods of narrative, comparison and microcosm, the author deeply analyses the salt’s tortuous development and historical transformation from the traditional property to modernity and colonized property in Taiwan. At the same time, in the view of the horizontal dimension and the synchronic dimension. The thesis focuses on the investigation, the reconstruction and further development of salt industry after the Sino-Japanese war from the micro perspective of salt, in order to provide the complement, which could research the establishment and evolution of Taiwan colonial economic system during the period of Japanese occupation from macro view. Focusing on the revolution of the salt monopolism in the period of Japanese occupation, the thesis fully states the succession and suspending of Taiwan salt industry in different periods, different governments, and different political and economic system. In order to achieve the study aim, the thesis is constructed in several parts. Firstly, the author reviews the development process of Taiwan salt monopoly system before the Sino-Japanese war. Secondly, the thesis states that Taiwan colonial government surveyed the salt industry situation, reconstructed the original salt monopolism, established the institutions and promulgated the regulations or rules of salt. Thirdly, it introduces the process of colonizing the salt production and sales system in Taiwan governor’s institution. In the salt production area, the colonial government surveyed the salt available lands, repaired and built salt lands; in the purchase and sale of salt, the colonial government issued the mode and procedures of salt storage and other rules, reformed the salt marketing system, and promoted the salt product to enter Japanese and Korea’s market. In this process, Taiwan colonial government promulgated a series of colonial law to control the production and sales of salt, to encourage the Japanese capital entering the salt industry, and gradually form merchant economy leaded by Japanese Salter. Finally, the Taiwan salt economy was included the wartime controlled economic system and achieved local "industrialization" in the background of Japanese massive invasion.During the period of Japanese occupation, Taiwan acted as a supply of strategic material and the dumping market of Japanese goods, which formed the interdependent relationship between Japan and colony. Transforming from the "industrial Japan, agricultural Taiwan" to "industrial Taiwan, agricultural Southeast Asia", Japan’s colonial policies in Taiwan all provided relevant economic resources for the development of capitalism and the foreign aggression, so that Taiwan had became an organic part of Japan’s wartime economic system. Salt is not only a very important economic resource in Taiwan, but also the strategic material that Japanese government wanted to control and exploit. The fundamental purpose of the salt monopoly system established by Japan was to control the Taiwan salt production and sales in order to maintain its colonial rule and meet the needs of salt production in Japan. It is not difficult to see that the salt monopoly system is not a simple fiscal and taxation economic system, but an important part of colonization foundation project with the core of managing the economic lifeblood. It is an important part of the colonial foundation engineering construction. Moreover, Taiwan salt economic system followed the Japanese wartime controlled economic system in the industrialize process, and aimed at serving Japanese aggression and colonial. |
