Taking the design standard of text typeface of modern Chinese as research object,taking classical calligraphy theory as tracing foundation in research and taking the research findings for design standard of text typeface of modern Chinese in Shanghai Printing Technology Institute Typeface Lab in 1960s as resources for detailed analysis,this article combines with contemporary design practice,sorts out and sums up multiple confounding standards at present,seeks for the link between many standards,finally integrates numerous standards from space angle,sorts them out and makes discrimination,traces the source and analyzes the status quo,thus refines and forms seven inter-promoting standards under three aspects,which are "reasonable form,well-proportioned layout,consistent size,aligned barycenter,well-distributed ink,unified stroke shape and proper central position" separately,it constitutes a complete set of tightly connected system structure.This article lays first stress on that the method for researching the design standard of text typeface of modern Chinese shall firstly return to the Chinese narrative itself,carries out theoretical exploration with both subjectivity and openness,defines the dividing line of concepts between "Chinese character typeface design" and "Chinese typeface design","text typeface" and "printing typeface","typeface design standard"and "characters standard",and maps out the research object of this article.In the second chapter,it summarizes the design standard for text typeface of modern Chinese,analyzes the reason why the standard took shape roughly in 1960s and sums up the structural system of the standard.The third chapter expounds the perspective of the standard--the isomorphism of black space and white space,emphasizes that the Chinese typeface design is the art of space,its standard of aesthetic judgment is "the beauty of balance".The fourth chapter observes the strokes of single character from the angle established by the sense of space balance of characters,considers that the balance of black and white space guarantees the clarity and stability of single character structure,while the balance between black space of black characters and white space of white characters stems from two inter-promoting standards--reasonable form and well-proportioned layout,and conducts detailed analysis on the concept,content and adjusting method of two standards as well as the connection with other standards.The fifth chapter discusses the typeface specification for realizing fluent reading of characters group,including the consistent typeface size in vision,aligned barycenter and well-distributed ink and makes exploration on concept distinction,meaning inquiry and adjusting method of these three standards.The sixth chapter analyzes the stroke shaping and central positioning that will influence the typeface.Chinese character typeface design has experienced three stages:block,type and computer.The text typeface in block stage directly comes from calligraphy,type is inherited from block,while computer typeface is the continuation of type.The design of any one stage comes out of the accumulation of former one and maintains its own changes.This article,based on the connection of calligraphy and block,taking the exploration of lead type era as the main body,establishes mature and systematic standard system for the typeface design of computer era,endows computer era its own standard,which is more systematic than the former two eras.This article completes three tasks:the first one is to gather standards scattered in the industry,investigate the source and function of each concept,discard what is false and keep what is genuine;the second one is to clarify detailed operating method of each code;the third one is to sort out the mutual relation between standards,and find the standard playing a supporting role as well as other standards operated and connected by taking it as the core.
