Block is one of the basic elements of urban form,the basic control unit of urban planning and management,and the most direct environmental support of urban buildings.Faced with the lack of diversity and vitality of urban blocks since the rapid development of urbanization in China,the internal complex order of block form need to be re‐recognized.As a cross‐disciplinary field,urban morphology provides a scientific framework for recognizing urban morphology patterns and mechanisms,but there are still obvious deficiencies in the study of the complexity of block form and the uniqueness of China’s urban blocks.This thesis selects Nanjing as the study object and takes urban morphology as the research perspective,trying to set up a systematic method to describe the morphological elements of urban blocks and their complex structure.This thesis summarizes and compares the main morphological methods from the perspective of epistemology,explores the recognitive framework of urban morphology field and their language,so as to provide reference for the construction of morphological representation approach.Firstly,Kropf’s‘compositional hierarchy’is established as the recognitive pattern.In view of the complexity of urban block form in China,the hierarchical structure is verified,revised and developed,which provides a qualitative method for defining the morphological elements and their relationship.Secondly,it introduces the thinking logic of configurational school,establishes a set of abstract diagrammatic language——access structure,and puts forward corresponding metrics,which greatly complements and deepens the representation approach.Thirdly,through the application of a wider range of urban environment,it is proved that the method system has strong applicability and validity in identifying the complex characteristics of block form.Finally,from the perspective of hierarchical structure and access structure,this thesis reinterprets the evolution process of block design and its idea,and proves that the representation approach has the potential to be translated into design language.Although the starting point is to solve the China’s local problems,the research results are highly matched with the cognitive framework of Urban Morphology field.Therefore,it plays a positive and constructive role in improving and optimizing the theoretical system of international Urban Morphology.From qualitative to quantitative,from the street network to the inner part of the block,this paper constructs a complete and coherent representation approach for the complexity of block form,which provides a new tool for recognizing the logic and order of urban blocks.Using mathematical model to demonstrate physical form not only strengthens the accuracy and scientificity of the method,but also lays a necessary foundation for the establishment of an integrated digital platform of analysis,design and control.The method system establishes the relationship between recognition and practice,and provides a new perspective of thinking and design for improving the environmental vitality of urban blocks.The text of the paper is about 74,000 words,with 127 figures and 17 charts.
