With the theme of “The Architecture Theory of Augustus Pugin” in this paper,the author regards the establishment and development of architectural theory by Augustus Pugin who was a British architect,designer and design theorist from 1920 s to 1950 s as the research object.Pugin established himself in academic reputation of architectural theory through his first book of “Contrasts;or,A parallel between the Noble Edifices of the Middle Ages,and Corresponding Buildings of the Present Day;Shewing the Present Decay of Taste”,he not only carry forward the art form of the middle ages is the supremacy in the book,and trying to prove that classical architecture on the aesthetic and moral are not desirable.Pugin's pointed architectural theory attempts to establish a universal set of rational laws for Gothic Architecture to prove that Gothic Architecture is the only correct form of architecture.He tried to replace the classical architecture with functionalism,structural rationalism and material rationalism.In the theoretical exposition,Pugin proposed a new concept,range and mode to provide a new path for construction of architectural theory.The new path of the theoretical construction predicts the subsequent modernism in architecture theory to a great extent.
