Ecological environment and economic growth are the contradictory unity in the process of regional economic development. How to coordinate the relationship, reduce ecological pressure and environmental pollution, and then improving the happiness index and quality of life of residents has been a hot topic for sustainable development of urban economy.Due to the long-term dependence on the high-input,high-consumption,high-output economic development model of natural resources in exchange for rapid economic growth, the ecosystem has entered the "empty world" into a "full world" with absolutely scarce natural capital, which hinders the effective promotion of human well-being.At present, economic development cannot rely on more resources and environmental consumption to improve human well-being.It can only rely on reducing resource consumption and environmental pollution to maintain or optimize the status of human development.Improving ecological well-being performance is an important means to achieve sustainable economic and social development in the region. This study takes 41 cities in the Yangtze River Delta as research units with drawing on the theoretical basis of well-being economics theory, sustainable development theory, ecological efficiency theory, and regional system theory of human-land relations. It focuses on the improvement of the well-being evaluation system to analyze the spatial-temporal evolution pattern, process, mechanism and path optimization of ecological well-being performance in the Yangtze River Delta city from the perspective of comprehensive well-being by using various geostatistical and mathematical methods such as principal component analysis, network NSBM-DEA model, spatial auto-correlation,structural decomposition model,LMDI model, panel gray correlation model, panel vector auto-regressive model, decoupling effect, spatial variation function, spatial panel Dubin model, threshold panel regression models and so on.The research broke through the previous two-dimensional development model based on ecological efficiency that transitioned to a three-dimensional model composed of natural consumption, economic growth and human well-being.At the same time, the transition from the weak sustainable development paradigm to the strong sustainable development paradigm has also been achieved, making up for the lack of attention on the social dimension of ecological efficiency. This demonstrates the people-oriented development concept, which is in line with the demands of the current ecological civilization construction, beautiful city construction and the main contradiction in society. The thesis is based on the measurement and analysis of resources and environmental pressures and comprehensive well-being with the premise of the space-time relationships and effects of resource and environmental pressures, economic growth and comprehensive well-being,following the main line of "factor measurement and evaluation, factor spatial and temporal relationship, pattern characteristics, evolution process, model summary, mechanism refinement, path optimization" to explore the spatial-temporal structure, process, driving mechanism, model and path optimization of urban ecological well-being performance in the Yangtze River Delta region. The full-text research content consists of four parts: The first part includes the first, second and third chapters, which are the basic theoretical parts. It introduces the full-text research background, goals and significance, main content and methods, technical routes, domestic and foreign research progress and related theoretical foundations, research framework construction, regional overview, etc. The second part is the empirical analysis, including chapters 4,5 and 6,which comprehensively evaluate the spatial-temporal characteristics of urban ecological well-being performance elements and their evolution mechanism, the temporal-spatial relationship of elements, the evolution pattern and process, the development model, the redundant analysis of input-output elements and direction for improvement. The third part is the seventh chapter, which analyzes the driving mechanism, comprehensive effect and optimization path of ecological well-being performance. The fourth part is the eighth chapter, which expounds the main conclusions, innovations, deficiencies and prospects of this research. The study found that:(1)the pressure of resources and environment in the Yangtze River Delta region is gradually increasing, and its growth rate can be roughly divided into three phases: rapid growth period, medium growth period and slow growth period with displaying the pattern of “East high, west low, south high, north low” in space. The pressure of the less developed marginal areas is growing faster than the economically developed areas with a“catching up effect”.Economic growth is a direct effect of the continuous increase in pressure on resources and the environment.(2)The levels of urban comprehensive well-being,economic well-being,and social well-being in the Yangtze River Delta region are continuously rising.Affected by environmental quality, environmental well-being has declined significantly, which has restricted the optimization and improvement of comprehensive well-being.Spatially,the pattern of continuous decline from southeastto northwest has gradually decreased, and the spatial differences have gradually narrowed, tending to develop in a balanced manner.(3)Economic growth serves as an intermediate variable and tool for the pressure on resources and environment and comprehensive well-being to build a bridge between the relationship between pressure on resources and environment and the level of comprehensive well-being.The three are interrelated and feedback each other.(4)The overall ecological well-being performance value of the cities in the Yangtze River Delta is generally not high with frequent fluctuations of rising and falling because of the mutual influence of well-being level, resource consumption and environmental pollution intensity. Most cities have achieved a transition from low-medium performance levels to higher-level performance levels.High-speed economic growth accompanied by low ecological well-being performance climbed,in general, the characteristics of the basin from "low in the middle and high in the surroundings" evolved to the pattern of "high in the east and low in the west, high in the south and low in the north",and the spatial polarization effect was weakened.A few cities have entered the sustainable development model, but most cities are still caught in a vortex of excessive resource input and insufficient green well-being output.(5)The spatio-temporal changes in the ecological well-being performance of cities in the Yangtze River Delta region are the combined effects and interactions of multidimensional effects such as the driving suppressing, promoting and canceling, regulating and responding by economic growth mode, urbanization development model, city size, consumption, industrial structure, technological innovation, environmental governance effectiveness and regional policies So that it shows a certain spillover effect in space and a threshold effect in time. This spatial spillover effect and threshold effect jointly drive the evolution of the spatial pattern of regional urban ecological well-being performance. Finally, corresponding countermeasures and suggestions are proposed for how to improve the performance of ecological well-being based on a series of empirical analysis.
