Sweden,Russia and other places have preserved a large number of military colours of Peter the Great,most of them are made of Chinese silk fabrics in 17 th century.These silk fabrics are the most concentrated silk material in China during the late Ming and early Qing dynasty.This paper systematically organizes and studies the Chinese silk fabrics used by military colours of Peter the Great,with more than 300 military colours of the Peter the Great collected in the Swedish Army Museum as key material,and which of other national museums as auxiliary materials.This paper studies Chinese silk fabrics used by the military colours of Peter the Great by the means of investigation and analysis of cultural relics,pattern restoration and image analysis,literature collection and mutual authentication,meanwhile supplemented by the necessary scientific experimental methods.The main contents are divided into eight chapters.The historical background and the decorative forms of colours are sorted out and analyzed in the second and third chapters.The military colours of Peter the Great are divided into three categories according the application: infantry colour,cavalry standard and dragoon guidon.This paper sums up two different decorative themes and 27 main forms,finally summarizes the purpose and use of Chinese silk fabrics on the military colours of Peter the Great.The fourth,fifth,sixth and seventh chapters of the paper are the key point.Taking the Chinese silk fabrics used by the military colours of Peter the Great as the studies,then comprehensively arranging and analyzing the artistic and technical characteristics of them.Firstly,the pattern restoration,most representative 152 silk patterns were restored as the basic material for pattern research and craft analysis.Secondly,the artistic research about layout of each silk pattern,rich pattern theme and modeling characteristics.Finally,the main varieties of Chinese silk fabrics used by the military colours of Peter the Great are analyzed.This paper discusses the varieties and craftwork characteristics of single-layer satin fabrics,plain weave patterned fabrics and plain weave silk respectively,then summaries the five major categories of Chinese patterned silk fabrics used by the military colours of Peter the Great.Supporting scientific experiments such as dating and dye identification in the process of art and technology research,which prove these Chinese silk fabrics used by the military colours of Peter the Great are woven and dyed in China in the17 th century.Some of these silk fabrics were produced in the late Ming Dynasty,while most of them were produced in the early Qing Dynasty,all were produced no later than 1700.Which show the pattern,artistic style and technical characteristics of Chinese silk fabrics during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.The eighth chapter of paper discusses the sources of Chinese silk fabric used by the military colours of Peter the Great,then combs the records of silk,silk fabric and silk trade between China and Russia during the 17 th century.Meanwhile puts forward the concept of silk diplomacy between China and Russia,and analyzes the variety,source,whereabouts of diplomatic silk.The Chinese silk fabric used by the military colours of Peter the Great is the precious evidence of direct and indirect trade between China and Russia in the 17 th century.The ninth chapter selects three pieces of typical military colours of Peter the Great as example to analyze the decorative styles and shape of typical colours,the artistic and technical characteristics of silk fabric.Finally discusses the time of some fabrics.
