In recent years, with the development of society and economy, more and more waste dumps have been put into use around the world, especially in developing countries. However,as a huge man-made geological body, devastating geological disasters, such as landslides, mudslides, frequently occur at these waste dumps, causing huge losses to people's life and properties. Therefore, the prevention and reduction of geological disasters in waste dumps has become an important issue that must be overcome. This article takes the Zhujiabaobao vanadium-titanium magnetite waste dump in Panzhihua as an example.Based on field investigation and laboratory experiments, numerical analysis is used as the main method to analyze the stability of Zhujiabao dump site under various conditions.Stability analysis and sensitivity analysis were carried out.In addition, the potential failure of a landslide and debris flows were predicted. The main contents of this paper and corresponding outcomes are as follows:Firstly, based on the field investigation and experiments, the current geological structure background and engineering geology of Zhujiabaobao vanadium-titanium magnetite waste dump were described. The topography and geomorphology, lithological composition, physical and mechanical properties of materials were introduced. And dangerous geological phenomena found in the field investigation, including the combination of small landslides and tension cracks, were also introduced. These describtion can make readers have a macro qualitative understanding about the stability of the waste dump.Secondly, after a qualitative understanding of the stability of the waste dump, slope stability analysis was conducted. The authors adopted the finite element method(FEM)with strength reduction techinique to achive it.Prior to this,a combination of remote sensing imagery, digital terrain model(DTM)data, terrain analysis,Geographic information system(GIS)technology processing, and 3D geological modeling technology were used to create a three-dimensional solid soil dumping model that can be used for numerical simulations. Then the model was given material parameters. After that, the authors analyzed the slope stability under various load conditions, including natural conditions, earthquake conditions, rainfall conditions, slope excavation conditions and additional load conditions. These analysis give readers a clear understanding of slope stability under various operating conditions.Thirdly, the sensitivity of key factors(fracture factors, water effects, seismic loads, local loads)that may have an important impact on slope stability was discussed. The key factors was analyzed, and the internal relationship between them and slope stability was also analyzed. Finally, combining with the results calculated by the finite element strength reduction method, the authors used the shallow water flow software SFLOW,which was developed by the College of Construction Engineering of Jilin University,to simulate the failure potential of landslide of the first step slope on Dao gullt. At the same time, the potential hazard scale of debris flows caused by landslide was simulated, and the situation wall preventing debris flows was also simulated. The cases provides a vivid and interesting template for the prediction of landslide-debris flow disasters.
