The wave glider was a new type of marine mobile environment monitoring platform that relied entirely on wave energy as the driving force.This paper was devoted to the research on the hydrodynamic performance of wave glider and prototype development.In order to solve the problem of hydrodynamic performance research of the wave glider under many assumptions,especially the study on the parameterization of propulsion performance under the passive pitching rotation of tandem hydrofoils.Firstly,the hydrodynamic simulation model of wave glider was established,and a numerical iterative solution method for hydrodynamic performance combined with Fine/Marine and STAR-CCM+ software is proposed.Based on this method,the simulation hydrodynamic performance of the wave glider under regular waves was conducted,and the motion law and influencing factors of the wave glider were analyzed.Aiming at the system study on the propulsion performance for passive pitching rotation of tandem hydrofoils,the parameterization study of passive pitching rotation of tandem hydrofoil is developed by changing the pivot aixs location,torsion spring sfiffness,oscillation amplitudes and other factors,to expand the parametric study of the passive pitching rotation of tandem hydrofoils,the required torsional spring stiffness is obtained when tandem hydrofoils acquire the best propulsion performance.The torsional spring stiffness required for the propulsion performance.Based on this,the prototype of the wave glider was developed,simulated a regular wave with wave height equivalent to the first-order sea state,and the experiment of the prototype was carried out.The result showed that the hydrodynamic simulation model of the wave glider could simultaneously describe the movement of the surface boat,the underwater drive mechanism pulled the surface boat and the passive pitching rotation of the tandem hydrofoils;the horizontal wave force and the passive pitching rotation law of tandem hydrofoils were important parameters that affected the propulsion performance of the wave glider;when the pivot axis of the hydrofoil was located at the leading edge and the torsion spring was installed at the hydrofoil pivot axis can significantly improve the speed of the wave glider,and the prototype can reach the same speed level as the SV2 model of Liquid Robotic Company of the United States under the first-class sea state.
