A Comparative Study Of Chinese And Western Scientific Journals

The trade war between China and the United States,especially the sanctions imposed by the United States on the Chinese communications industry,has made the Chinese people aware of the importance of science and technology in the competition of the world today.Many scholars have explored the reasons for the backward science in modern China.Joseph Needham,a British historian of science and technology,put forward the famous "Joseph Needham problem",and academician Tsien Hsueshen also put forward a famous "question of Tsien Hsueshen".Scientific journals are a symbol of national scientific and technological strength,which can affect the scientific and national development of a country.Taking the representative Chinese and western scientific journals as the breakthrough to analyze the differences between them and deeply analyze the underlying causes of the huge differences,we can sum up the experience of the development of western scientific journals and provide reference for the future development of Chinese ones and the reform of national science and technology policy.This paper is divided into four parts.First,it introduces the general situation of the development of Chinese and western scientific journals,and it also introduces the relationship between scientific journals and science.Secondly,there are six pairs of cases as follow:the American Journal Science and the Chinese ScienceJournal,the British Journal Nature and Chinese Journal of Nature,Scientific American and Scientific Chinese,Science and Science Bulletin,Science and Science&Technology Review,Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America and Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences.The paper analyses the above six group cases respectively by using of the big data and quantitative research method to compare the amount of text,influence factors,total cites and source of literature.And the author also uses qualitative research method to study the development history of journal characteristic,and so on.Then,the great differences between Chinese and western scientific journals are deeply analyzed.It thinks that the Chinese people prefer the "borrowlism",and indulge in the imitation of other people,and do not pay attention to the basic scientific research.So they can't learn the quintessence of science to lead to the lack of original innovation in Chinese scientific articles,which is the fundamental reason for the difference between Chinese and western scientific journals.Other reasons for the difference between them are such as the mechanical system of management in Chinese research,the excessive management of scientific journals,and the different development of the Chinese and western scientific system.Finally,the article lists some pertinent suggestions for relevant departments aiming at Chinese scientific journals on the basis of contrastive analysis.For example,we should insist on the original method of scientific independence,innovate the content of scientific journals,reform current scientific evaluation system,and do not be too superstitious to the western scientific evaluation system,and so on.The innovation of the article lies in the research contents and methods.In the research contents,six pairs of representative Chinese and western scientific journals were selected as cases to conduct comparative study them deeply.In the study method,the combination of qualitative research and quantitative research is used to make a macro survey of Chinese and western scientific journals,and then six groups of them are studied in the microcosmic case.
