This dissertation studied the intrinsic connection and paradoxical relation between the huge cost of consumption related to local ritual culture and absolute poverty in real life in Anbanatova village in the town of Mahitsy,which is located in the plateau area in the middle of the island country Madagascar.The Main research method applied in the dissertation is field study from an anthropologic and economic perspective.Based on the study,the dissertation put forward the proposal that culture needs to adapt itself in time of change to get along with the development of the society.Starting with expounding the ritual,which is the behavioral manifestation of cultural,the dissertation also analyzed the viability of developing a cultural industry by making a strategic analysis of the macro-environment.At last,this dissertation gave suggestions on the developmental path and mechanism of cultural industry,and reached the conclusion that the development of a cultural industry will solve the problem of poverty and preserve the national culture.This dissertation is composed by 6 parts,including introduction and conclusion.The first part is the introduction.In this part,the factors that aroused the interest of this study are introduced.Also contained in this part are the conceptual definitions of ritual,ritual consumption,poverty,which are based on examining the existing studies on ritual consumption,poverty in Madagascar.By doing these,the significance,research method and technical path are set forth.The second part,namely the first chapter,mainly manifested the absolute poverty in people's daily life in Ampanataovana by examining the development of agriculture,average income,educational status,inequality of gender,sanitary and health situation of people in the village.In doing this,this dissertation researched the geographic environment,the natural resources,the ecologic features,the society,the historic and cultural tradition of Madagascar and the village of field study.This part also includes the introduction of the consideration in choosing Anbanatova as the place for field study.The third part,which includes the second and the third chapter,examined the rituals in details,including daily rituals and grand rituals.By examining the cost of time,space,labor and money,this part analyzed the expense of local people on various rituals and its impact on poverty.The fourth part,which is the fourth chapter,came to the finding that the expense on rituals is the main cause for local poverty from the perspective of interaction between culture and economy.The main methodology used in this part is applying the data concerning ritual cost and other consumption cost to an econometric model.The fifth part is the fifth chapter.In this part,the conclusion and suggestions derived from the conclusion were given.By weighing and sifting the various rituals from the angle of cultural resources,this part studied the viability of the development of cultural industry in Anbanatova on the base of strategic analysis of the macro-environment.This part also proposed the path and mechanism for the development of cultural industry.The main conclusion is that the development of cultural industry is the only way for local people to get a win-win situation for society and economy,that is,to solve the problem of poverty and preserve traditional cultural at the same time.The sixth part is the epilogue of the dissertation.In this part,beginning with the correlation between economy and culture,the dissertation proposed that traditional culture is not necessarily compatible with modernity.Only when combined with modern economy,can traditional culture be rejuvenated.The cultural industry is the only way which Ampanataovana must be passed for poverty reduction,alleviation and eventually get rid of.Moreover,it is also the actual requirement for protecting,inheriting and developing the traditional culture.We also need to reexamine the culture about poverty as well as rethink the problem of poverty.
