The fact that the teaching of English has been paid the utmost attention to,yet has proven inefficient and needlessly repetitive,has now become a persistent ailment of English education.Tackling this problem has become an urgent mission in current English teaching and research circles.Previous research attributed this persistent ailment to the utilitarian and instrumental orientation of English instruction and learning,as well as the lack of the Humanities in English education.This present research suggests that developing students' reading ability is helpful in redressing inefficiency and repetitiveness,particularly in regards to reading literature as the core means of improving reading ability.This is beneficial to developing overall language ability,English thinking patterns,humanistic literacy,and to cultivating students'personality and character.This dissertation primarily focuses on the method of action research.The theme of this research is the means and effect of applying literature reading in the teaching of English reading in Senior High School.This research was conducted in two key middle schools in N city,and lasted over five years.There were 535 subjects from these two key schools.The action research progressed through three cycles:The first cycle was the trial and exploration of literature reading,which focused on the classroom teaching of literature reading.The second cycle was the adjustment and improvement of literature reading,which focused on curriculum design.The third cycle was the promotion and application stage of literature reading,which focused on the revision pattern based on literature reading.In addition to this practical research,this dissertation includes reflective and developmental research into English literature reading and teaching.This reflective research centers on the inclusion in,and reflection upon,the previous action research.The developmental research centers on the future and guarantee of success of English literature reading and teaching.The conclusions of the dissertation are as follows:1.Probe the teaching strategies and models of literature reading and teaching in Senior High School by means of action research and the establishment of four teaching models and their operation strategies.The four teaching models include:Task Presentation,Comprehensive Analysis,Integration of Reading and Writing,Enjoying and Performing.2.Establishment of curricular systems based on the situation of Senior High schools,and the integration of mandatory and elective coursesin the curricular framework of literature instruction.Also,this indicates the reading model of the Literature Circle contributes to the enhancement of the ability of automatic learning and higher-order thinking skills.3.Proof of the curricular value of English literature reading and teaching through questionnaires,as well as interview and case studies.English literature reading can not only improve students' reading and writing abilities and reading literacy,but also possesses special curricular value in terms of promoting ideology and literacy.The innovation in this research includes:1.Extension of curriculum resources:Currently,textbooks in Senior High School are updated very slowly,resulting in outdated volumes that lack complete literary works.This research is aimed at injecting fresh blood into literature reading by helping extend the current curriculum resources for senior high school.2.Construction of reading pedagogy.This research includes new reading teaching concepts such as Literature Circles,Theme Reading,Sustained Silent Reading,and the like,which have been popular for many years in foreign countries.This research draws lessons from these concepts and helps establish some reading models appropriate to students.This research also covers the choice of the materials and the exploratory research into the English literature reading model.All this research is a self-created localization of experience drawn from foreign models.3.Investigation into core literacy in the subject.This research keeps pace with research into core literacy.The implementation of literature reading regards the development of core literacy in English teaching as one of its primary teaching aims.It works to find a trigger point,that is a point that connects the implementation of literature reading in senior high school—which explores the feasibility of cultivating language ability—to thinking ability and cultural awareness.In geoneral literature pedagogy is of great significance in improving the classroom atmosphere,cultivating humanistic qualities,enhancing the spiritual fulfillment of the students,which in turn can transform English teaching into English education.
