American And Chinese Literature And The "American Dream" Narrative Research

American Chinese Literature is an indispensable part of world Chinese Literature.Since Angel Island,the words written by Chinese labors during their "Gold Rush"became early representations of American Chinese Literature.The so called American Dream include Chinese people's gold rush in California,their involvement in both Canadian and American's railroad construction and agriculture,Chinese intellectuals'studying of Western science and civilization in the U.S.at the period of New Culture Movement,the America boom in Taiwan in 1950s,as well as the trend of New Immigrants" prevailed throughout of China at the end of 1970s.Writing about American Dream is a distinctive part in American Chinese Literature for its unique features.This thesis will mainly focus on these features.American dream,"a dream for a better,deeper,and richer life",is first created during the great depression in the United States.It is the Americans' American dream first,then it became that of some Chinese too since "the gold rush".Chinese American Dream eventually refers to Chinese people striving to make their own life value in the U.S.The Bitter Society,one of the original texts,is a literature presentation of Chinese people's pursuit of American Dream.Around the New Culture Movement in China,the intellectuals go abroad to look for an American dream,a western dream,and a dream of national rejuvenation.Their "American dream" is more of a democratic modern dream and the dream of pursuit of modern culture.After Kuomintang regime,the Taiwan literature,take Bai Xianyong for an example,still includes the pursuit of the American dream.Their American dream is fleeing home,arriving in "paradise".However,the dream vaporizes after they get into American society,which makes the American dream even more complex.Since”New Immigrants Literature ",Chinese American dream is no longer full of bitterness and painful memories.It becomes one of the ways to realize their own life value in the era of globalization.When earth becomes a small "village",the pursuit of the American dream,free from the usual culture color,is getting more simple and pure.It is a pursuit of dream followed by the disillusion of idealism,a dream of chasing material interests,protecting their own rights and interests,emerging into the heterogeneous culture,and narrating from "falling leaves" to "return to your roots".Chinese people are gradually adapting and involved in western cultures surrounded by the heterogeneous culture.As a result,the "The Third Culture Space" appeared under the circumstance of cultural contrast and examine,forming its own "neither this nor that,both this and that".Under the globalization background,their narrative perspective of American dream is more far-sighted,more initiative,and rich in cultural connotations under the context of world American Chinese literature.
