Fang Fang is not only the representative writer of new realistic novel,but also an author long committed to the novels on intellects.The images of intellects in her novels represent various categories of intellects of several generations in contemporary China.Given the substantial research on her work,the intellect image is an area worthy of more exploitation.This paper unveils the lifestyle and destiny of intellects in Fang Fang's novels,and a history of the lives and spirits of Chinese intellects she revealed through these intellect images.Since the founding of new China,the depiction of life experiences of intellects in China has always been an important theme for novel creation.In the Seventeen Years'Literature(1949-1966),the major image of intellects is those under criticism who suffered from the heavy burden from the society and a life without any silver-lining.The intellects in the works of 1980s demonstrate a strong characteristic of suffering and reflection.The intellects under the pen of writers from 1990s featured a marginalized identity,routinized life and desire of mind.The intellects created by the writers of new century reflects a collective turning,to re-uncover the subject of anti-rightist and cultural revolution,and to depict the persistence of intellects to their traditional values and the collective fickleness under the impact of market economy and consumer culture.In the over 30 years of writing since early 1980s,Fang Fang has been committed to depict the collective image of intellects.In her works,the image of intellects is not only in compliance with the features of intellects created by authors of generations since the founding of new China,but also demonstrates the core spirit of intellects of recent generations in a highly concise manner.The grandfather-type intellects precede those in the 17-years' literature.They are the spiritual stereotype inspiring a generation of intellects.The father-type intellects refer to those right after the founding of new China.Similar to the images of intellects in the 17-years' literature,they lived in a difficult situation.The 3rd generation intellects refer to those after the coming of new period,they were gradually elbowed to the edge of society by market economy.After the advent of new century,Fang Fang re-analyzed the images of intellects of the new period and new century in a deeper and more detailed manner,which gave her a more profound comprehension on the current situation for the intellects.Her work titled Vivid Love presents the awkward destiny of intellects of two generations in the new period and new century,spotlighting the difficult situation faced by the intellects of new century,as well as the disadvantages and weakness of the intellects themselves.The intellect images in Fang Fang's novels are created through not only reconstruction of the living conditions of the intellect group,but also exploration into their sense of responsibility.Such exploration incorporates critical analysis into the social problems they were confronting,and more importantly,their adaptation,faiths,and changes under various living conditions.This,as this paper believes,is the starting point and the focal point of her creation of intellect images.While depicting the intellects,Fang Fang rendered them with certain noble temperament.However,the noble temperament of intellects is mixed and co-exists with the environment of vulgar city.Through depicting the fading of noble temperament of intellects in the vulgar city,Fang Fang under stressed various crisis faced by the intellects.In all,Fang Fang raised very serious questions in her novels.What is the historic mission of intellects?If the intellects resign themselves to allow their conscientiousness and belief being eaten up by the cultural weightlessness of the society,it will be a tragedy not only for the intellects but also for the nation.
