Objective Inheritance is the foundation of passing down Traditional Chinese Medicine. The establishment of master-apprentice system is based on the characteristics of TCM. In such practical and experience-based medicine, doctors' clinical experience has significant values for further learning and reference. Thus in the development of TCM, with individualized training and constant theorization of experience for future practice, master-apprentice system serves as an effective mode of passing down prestigious TCM doctors' wisdom. This thesis collects and sorts out Professor Wang Songling's TCM clinical experience in encephalopathy, analyzes and summarizes his clinical experience and academic ideas, studies the classic cases with TCM dialectical thinking, focusing on his speculative features and medication patterns of stroke and snoring. The aim of this thesis is to preserve Professor Wang Songling's academic ideas and clinical experience, thus providing more references and new thoughts in the treatment of encephalopathy in TCM.Methodology Professor Wang Songling's published articles, monographs and lecture transcripts are sorted out and analyzed to summarize Professor Wang's academic ideas and clinical experience in encephalopathy in TCM. Professor Wang's cases of treating stroke and snoring as well as his commonly used drugs are collected comprehensively. Databases are established and frequency analysis is employed to analyze Professor Wang's medication patterns and summarize his dialectical thinking and treatment thoughts. Results Analysis of 320 patients' drug use indicates Professor Wang Songling's treatment of stroke and snoring relies mostly on medicine of transforming phlegm, dispelling dampness, quickening the blood, rectifying, supplementing deficiency, disinhibiting water, freeing the stool, dispersing food, blood-cooling and wind-extinguishing, with a cumulative frequency of 94.51%. Among all the drugs, those of transforming phlegm, dispelling dampness, quickening the blood, rectifying, supplementing deficiency are most frequently used and play a major role in clinical treatment, with a cumulative frequency of 71.31%. Listed below are the commonly used drugs in each medicine category(ten categories with the highest frequencies are listed): Phlegm-transforming medicine: Rhizoma Pinellinae Praeparata, Arisaema Cum Bile, Sinapis Albae Semen, Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii, Apricot Kernel, Radix Polygalae, Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim, Fritillary Bulbs, Platycodon, Coltsfoot, Asteris Radix, Cynanchi Stauntonii Rhizoma; Dampness-dispelling medicine: Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Fructus Amomi, Semen Coicis, Nelumbinis Folium; Blood-quickening medicine: Chuanxiong Rhizome, Peach Kernel, Angelica Sinensis, Pseudo-Ginseng, Hirudo, Pollen Typhae, Curcumae Radix; Rectifying medicine: Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, Costustoot, Mangnolia Officinalis; Deficiency-supplementing medicine: Liquorice, Codonopsis Pilosula, Ginseng, Cervi Cornus Colla, Astragali Radix, Radix Polygoni Multiflori, Lycii Fructus, Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae; Water-disinhibiting medicine: Poria Cocos, Rhizoma Alismatis, Herba Lycopi, Semen Plantaginis; Stool-freeing medicine: Rheum Officinale, Semen Cannabis, Snakegourd Seed, Herba Cistanche; Food-dispersing medicine: Charred Fructus Ustus, Massa Medicata Fermentata Usta, Hordei Fructus Germinatus Ustus, Endothelium Corneum Gigeriae Galli;Blood-cooling medicine: Rehmannia Rhizome, Radix Lithospermi, Radix Rubiae; Wind-extinguishing medicine: Rhizoma Gastrodiae, Uncaria Rhynchophylla, Pberetima, Scorpio, Squama Manitis, Semen Cassiae. Basic drugs most frequently used by Professor Wang to treat stroke and snoring are: Rhizoma Pinellinae Praeparata, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Chuanxiong Rhizome, Sinapis Albae Semen, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Peach Kernel, Rhizoma Gastrodiae and Poria Cocos. Conclusion 1 Professor Wang Songling's main experience of diagnosis and treatment about stroke includes: liver and Yin deficiency and collaterals blocked by phlegm-stasis are the basic pathogenesis of ischemic stroke; phlegm and blood stagnation exist in the whole course of the disease; both the sufficiency and deficiency syndrome the of stroke, treatment takes the form of “dredging intestines”;apply the muiti-drug to enhance the curative effect; more emphasis should be placed on prevention than treatment; TCM and western medicine need to be integrated in the treatment of stroke related diseases and symptoms such as stroke syndromes, transmuted cases of stroke, stroke complications and deteriorated cases of stroke. 2. In his treatment of stroke and snoring, Professor Wang Songling grasps the basic pathogenesis of deficient root and superficial excess. He points out the deficient root is deficiency in lung and spleen Qi and loss of luxuriance while the superficial excess is turbid phlegm and blood stasis blocking channels and network vessels. Therefore, the three vital pathological factors, phlegm, blood stagnation and deficiency, are focus in treatment. According to the statistics in the thesis, the frequencies of phlegm-transforming, dampness-dispelling, blood-quickening, rectifying and deficiency-supplementing medicine are evidently higher, whether in the statistics of medicine category or the use frequency of each drug. The principles of transforming phlegm, dispelling dampness, quickening the blood and rectifying are held throughout the treatment.Basic drugs most frequently used by Professor Wang to treat stroke and snoring are: Rhizoma Pinellinae Praeparata, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae,Chuanxiong Rhizome, Sinapis Albae Semen, Rhizoma Atractylodis, Peach Kernel, Rhizoma Gastrodiae and Poria Cocos.
