Astronomical Connotation And Representation Of Architecture

This paper deals with two fields: architectural history and astronomy history.Previous research on architectural history are mostly focused on the history of art,culture,construction technology as well as other perspectives.Besides,the astronomical characteristics of the architecture are often mixed with the ancient Chinese cosmic philosophy,astrology,religion,etc.,which resulting in the connotation of astronomy has not been effectively revealed.Astronomy is considered as one of the earliest sciences,with which architecture had been closely connected from the very beginning.Based on the scientific connotation of architecture,this paper introduces archaeoastronomy as a new analyzing method for historical sites with over 100 years development,the research results of which not only analyzed the astronomical characteristics of the prehistoric relics and remains,but also demonstrated the general laws for distinguishing the orientation in ancient architecture,dividing time and season and the common rules of astronomical observation.After reviewing the achievements of archaeoastronomy,the astronomical connotation and representation of architecture are summarized as follows: the space-time measuring based on the law of celestial body motion,the space atmosphere creation on the basis of the space-time measuring and the architecture spatial layout based on cosmological cognition.These three parts are respectively discussed as the main contents of the paper.Besides,design explorations corresponding to the three performances of the astronomy in contemporary architecture are respectively discussed.Finally,this paper summarizes the performance of the astronomy,analyzes its influence on architecture and change of its role in architecture,and discusses scientificalness of architecture from its significance on archeology and architectonics.The grasp of the connotation of ancient architectural astronomy will become an important reference for the understanding of ancient science and technology.At the same time,it also provides the essential evidence for further interpretation of the spatial characteristics and construction purpose of ancient architecture.
