The regional geological structure refers to the geological structure features within the range of a particular region.Geologists had long studied various geological phenomena and expressed geological structures via natural language, geological map and structure map. However, after Geological Information System is widely used and geological phenomena can be better expressed with multi-dimensional geometrical elements: points, lines, surfaces and spaces, people become confused at what geological entity or phenomenon these elements can describe. This leads to a problem between space expressive capability of GIS and complex geological structure,i.e.,geologists cannot understand spatio-temporal modeling approach while GIS scientists cannot understand complex geological structure, hence not be able to describe corresponding geological phenomena using GIS language. Therefore, building connection between natural language, map language that geologists use and GIS language so that geological structure can be described by GIS language is of great significance to both GIS study and geological structure study.This paper does semantic analysis and modeling on phenomena of regional geological structures in tectonic structure, regional structure and micro structure.This paper aims to analyze and tease semantics of geological structure, so as to realize the defining and expressing of structuralization,formalization, spatialization of natural language and geological structure, which joins and maps with GIS language. Based on the study of semantic standardized description,semantic expression and spatio-temporal relation of geological structure, this paper begins the study with semantic entity of geological structure, builds semantic modeling approach and takes Ning-Zheng mountains as example verification.This paper made the following research:(1) It puts forward standardized description for geological structure semantic entity. It defines relevant concepts: semantic entity, semantic entity combination and semantic entity relation. Based on the analysis of the multi-scale in geological structure semantic entity, it adopts the classification principles and methods and builds a unified classification system for geological structure semantic entities. It also puts forward semantic entity classification and encoding methods, answering to comprehending problem in geological structure phenomena.(2) It puts forward expressing methods for geological structure semantic entity to solve the problem of overlooking geological structure semantics during modeling. It adopts a triangulation network of semantics, vocabulary and legend. For the scale discrepancy in geological structure, it summarizes corresponding scale magnitudes and measuring scale at different levels of semantic entities in geological structure,together with the geometrical element type in the small, middle and large scale.(3) It puts forward the spatio-temporal relation among semantic entities in geological structure. It summarizes the classification of relation among semantic entities in geological structure at different levels to solve the problem of discordance between geological structure terminology and topological expression. It also summarizes the mapping of geological structure vocabulary of spatial relation,topological relation, distance relation and direction relation.(1)For small and middle scale geological structure vocabulary of spatial relation, it studies the vocabulary of spatial relation of strata, joint, fold and fault, through basic description of vocabulary--- semantic description of vocabulary---semantic interpretation.(2) For large(giant) scale, it compares and analyzes Plate Tectonic theory ,Groove theory and Spatial relations vocabulary of geomechanics.(4) Example verification of building geological structure GIS semantic model.It gives an example of semantic modeling of geological structure. Through describing the natural language,GIS language and map language of geological structure of Ning-zheng mountains, it successfully builds the semantic modeling of geological structure of Ning-zheng mountains. This semantic model compensates the problem between space expressive capability of GIS and complex geological structure,puts forward geometrical classification of geological structure semantic entities in research area, carries out the division and extraction, spatio-relation statistics of the entities and designs the map symbol expression of the geological structure in the research area. Through the example verification, it not only solves the problem between space expressive capability of GIS and complex geological structure, but also gives a demonstration for GIS semantic entity modeling.
