The environment for manufacturers is shifting from industrial topost-industrial as customer requests for specific product applications grow, manufacturing and information technologies expand, and global competitionincreases. In the industrial mode, firms compete in homogeneous nationalmarkets with competitors having access to the same labor and capital sources aswell as the same supplier base. Market segments are large and stable, product lifecycles are long, and production costs and economies-of-scale are hallmarks ofleading companies. In the post-industrial mode, firms compete in heterogeneousglobal markets where competitors have access to diverse labor, capital, andsupply conditions, and they employ various strategies and new technologies toimprove competitiveness. Market segments are narrowing and constantl ychanging, and product life cycles are relatively short as new products areintroduced with increasing speed. Leading companies exhibit economies-of-scope, and these companies compete simultaneously on multiple criteria, such ascost, quality, product variety, and time. Hence, Rapid and effective new productdevelopment is a primary strategic competitive capabilities in which firmsactually adapt. Then, how to develop product for companies quickly? Many researchers highlight that it is necessary to coordinateinterdependence between design and manufacturing functions via integration. They suggest that the implementation of design-manufacturing integration isconducive to shorten the development time, and accelerate the speed of newproduct introduction. Product quality, product innovation and customers’satisfaction are improved. Therefore, design-manufacturing integration as astrategic competitive capability is adapted by firms. However, empirical resultson relationship between design-manufacturing integration and new productperformance are highly mixed. The different study results show that it isnecessary to have a depth study for design-manufacturing integration, andresearchers called for a refined theory of design-manufacturing integration and successful process adoption to well explain the relationship betweendesign-manufacturing integration and new product performance. This paper analyzed manufactures design-manufacturing integration and itsrelation to new product performance, and adaptation influencing on them. Thispaper defined design-manufacturing integration, adaptation, new productperformance, and divided adaptive modes into two parts--compression modes, experiential modes. The analysis of the influence between design-manufacturingintegration and new product performance from compression modes andexperiential modes, the postulation as well as the theory model were offered inthe research on the basis of the previous studies and theories. The data is collected through the International Manufacturing Strategy(IMSS-V)2009. The IMSS-V offers the company level data which includes750manufacturing samples of20countries around the world. The empirical studywill be analyzed by the hierarchical regression analysis method with SPSS13.0.The empirical results indicate that:(1) Based on compression modes,design-manufacturing integration has positive effects on new productperformance. Market changes have no significant moderating effect on therelationship between compression modes and new product performance.Technological changes have a significant moderating effect on the relationshipbetween compression modes and new product performance. Based onexperiential modes, design-manufacturing integration has positive effects on newproduct performance. Market changes have a significant moderating effect on therelationship between experiential modes and new product performance,Technological changes have a significant moderating effect on the relationshipbetween experiential modes and new product performance. Simultaneously, Thispaper attempts to use Triangulation methods, We also view design-manufacturingintegration as a complex adaptive system to achieve another evidence ofrelationship between design-manufacturing integration and new productperformance based on Black box theory. This dissertation tries to expand design-manufacturing integration to amore dynamic enterprise concept, through the study on design-manufacturingintegration based on adaptive perspective, and to explore the use of design-manufacturing integration to facilitate the effectiveness of new productperformance, it is helpful for companies to plan and implement design-manufacturing integration.
